This really is a thing of beauty! Anyone got one? Opinions?

definitely a thing of beauty, and no, I don't have one. Personally I'd prefer the black or green. One small niggle for me is the magnifier on the date, I'd prefer it without the magnifier. Still, I'd love one :D

the guys over on watchuseek have a thorough review on it here (dated December 2006).

Sometimes I wish they would focus more on original designs, but that's a really lovely Rolex "homage". I like it, if only to see the purists baulk at the 42mm case and display case back.

Their prices are sneaking up though; they'll be in Stowa territory if they continue, and they're not at that level when it comes to quality.

I have been looking at this watch recently, I agree really night watch, but dont like the magnifier...

Is there a Steinhart distributor in Ireland. I have emailed Steinhart, but no reply...

No, they're online only - at least in Ireland, if not all other countries. They do versions without the date window, but I think in styles that might not look different enough for you, going by your other thread (do you like the vintage-ish look?). Though perhaps check out the Ocean 2 version - it comes on a steep bracelet as well, and isn't too far off your budget. It's more like an IWC than a Rolex, so not as common as the large number of sub homages out there.

    Hi Eoin,

I actually like the vintage style, but find some of the vintage stuff too thin.
I think my problem is I dont really know what I want. I usually know what I want when I find it.

Well, Steinhart is ideal for that. They do vintage style watches that are larger than the originals (e.g. 42mm subs instead of 38/40mm).

Yeah just been looking at their website and like the look of the marine officer one. Have sent them another email asking if they do it with a bracelet rather then a leather strap

If it's not an option on their checkout page, then you may need to look at getting a bracelet from them from this page that wasn't specifically designed for that model. But if that's the 800 quid watch you're looking at, it opens up a lot of other options.

    Hi Eoin,

Yeah thats the one I was looking at. Didnt go all the way to the check out page. I just thought I would ask them. They might be able to make a bracelet for it....

Sorry, I meant the product page itself - if there are strap options, it'll be listed there.

If you look at the link I posted above, you can see the bracelet options they offer. One of them (you're looking for 22mm ones) might work fine with this one - the mesh one could be an option. They take a bit of getting used to visually, but I find them very comfortable. Plus you don't really need curved end pieces for them.

They might be able to swap out a strap for a bracelet and deduct the difference, but I'd be surprised if they do any custom work. And at the guts of 900, you should look around. I'd be looking around for a 2nd hand Stowa personally.

Yeah I think they might be possibilities. But I think over time the bronze will change colour as it tarnishes, so might be hard to get a bracelet to match. I dont like buying 2nd hand, just because I dont know enough to look myself. I know I could buy 2nd hand from a jeweller, but are their prices inflated....

I am fussy when it comes to buying things. I dont make decisions lightly and dont buy things unless i am 100% happy. I think thats why I dont like buying online

Hi Deep Thought, nice watch but not what I am looking for...

Regarding the magnifier. I have read on other Forums that Steinhart will sometimes sell without it if you ask nicely.

    Ok I think
I have decided I am going to get a Steinhart. Does anyone have them. And honest opinions...

I've owned 3 and they've all been very good quality. Their subs are good value for money. I like the marine you're looking at but havent seen one in the flesh. If I saw one for a decent price I would certainly be tempted, it looks like a versatile watch.

You should Google for reviews of it. I think a matching bronze strap would be OTT, if it's only available with a leather strap there's probably a reason for it. If you're really not fond of leather than go for a watch that's been designed to take a bracelet.

The main criticism of the brand is that their designs are not very unique and just copies of famous brands (Rolex, IWC etc). Their customer service is getting much better, their pre-sales is still not great. I lost a screw from a bracelet and they sent replacement ones and a springbar removal tool free of charge to me.

Cool thanks for the advice. Yeah really like the marine. i have tried on a few lether strap watches yesterday and starting to come round to it. I contacted them yesterday and them back to say they would sell the watch with any strap they have. I thought strange that they would sell something that may not loo right. But then again they are catering for customers taste wuhich is good.

Looking at their straps the only one that suits it is the leather one it has. I was looking at the ocean one but your right it does just look like a copy... So many choices.

The other question is do they take cards over the phone?? I dont use paypal and bank transfers can be a pain.....

Don't get me wrong, their subs are great watches in their own right and many other brands both cheaper and more expensive than steinhart also have very similar styles to Rolex. The marine does look good, though for all I know, it could be modelled very closely on something by a big brand.

I wasn't mad on leather either at first but now it's become my preference. If you go with the bronze one, it could look cool on a NATO strap too, it's a cheap way to change the look of a watch for a few days and then change back to another strap. Edit: looks like the lugs are screwed rather than taking a springbar - makes it a lot easier to change a strap.

Dunno if they take payments over the phone but online BT should be fairly easy once you have their IBAN.
