Replacing hard drive - Advice needed

Had a Dell Inspiron 1545 for a few years and used it now and again for differnet stuff. Unfortunately yesterday It wouldnt boot and was instead giving an error message which seems to relate to the hard drive failing and coming to it's end. I dont have anything important on there so thats not really an issue

Obviously having it a few years it's out of warranty etc. The laptop has Windows 7. If I buy a hard drive, what's the best way of putting Windows 7 on it? I've never had to do this before so I wouldnt really know the steps. I read that Dell may send out a CD if I can tell them the previous product key.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you still able to read the windows 7 product key under the laptop? If you can't you may be able to find someone who has a 1545 (very common) that can create recover discs for you and you may not require a key. You could also get a copy of spinrite and see if your hard drive can be recovered enough so that you can create your own discs so you are ready for when your drive does completely die!

Find out which version of Windows 7 and then download the correct version from here - https://sites.google.com/site/linuxlablibrary/windows-iso

If you have, for example, a Windows 7 Home Premium Licence key, it will not work with Windows 7 Ultimate.

Also, make sure which version 64bit (x64) or 32bit (x86) you need.

If you have a USB key, you may find it easier to install windows using that.
Download LinuxLive USB Creator (LiLi) from - HERE

    and follow this guide:
Creating a Linux Live USB key is then an easy step process:

step 1: choose a USB key or drive in the list
step 2: select an ISO file or a CD [In your Case the Windows ISO you just downloaded]
step 3: click the lightning button to start the creation

    Remember to Boot from USB.

You may not need to enter a serial, as the Dell may be detected automatically.
