Will anti-depressants help me?

    I’ll spare the long preamble – I am in my late twenties and I have never reached my full potential. I attribute this to

    * laziness
    * lack of organisation
    * lack of focus
    * selfishness
    * impulsiveness

    I hate the person I am shackled to. I scrape by, barely, but I am not a coper.

    Suicidal thoughts are something I’ve toyed with since I was in my early teens.

    I was offered antidepressants when I was in my mid-teens, but turned them down as I felt I didn’t merit them. I want to get my life sorted, but I feel my general mental outlook is a severe handicap that is difficult to snap out of.

    I am capable of much better than what I currently am.

    Will antidepressants help me focus and get my life sorted?

    Forgive the rambling nature of this post, it was written in a hurry.

    Hi OP,

    I'm sorry, but as per the forum rules, seeking or offering medical advice is not permitted here, and only a medical professional will be able to tell you if anti-depressants will help you. From what you have described though, I think that you could very much benefit from talking to your GP about this, or better still, seeing a counsellor and talking to them about your thoughts and how you have been feeling - it's sounds like you have been struggling trying to deal with them by yourself. The Psychology forum has an excellent sticky thread on How to find a Counsellor/Therapist/Psychologist which can be found here.

    On that note, I shall close the thread, but I wish you the best in working through your problems with a professional.
