Our community project has a garden that has been (somewhat) reclaimed from being a building site. Is it any use spreading fertiliser in December and January to improve the soil quality or should we just leave it closer to the time of planting flowers and vegetables? G

Depends on what fertilizer, but if it's well rotten manure , then yes put it on. This is the best stuff to use as it ' feeds the ground', encouraging all things beneficial for growing vegetables etc.

If it's out of a bag , what are you using,?.

Prob best to wait till early spring, as some of the nutrients can leach away in water.
    Chicken manure pellets are great.
