Is there any work around/hack that lets you use skype on a chromebook ?

Within Chrome OS not really. I think you can chat from Outlook.com but calls are not natively supported.

It has long been rumoured (and I emphasise rumoured) that they are working on a browser based version of it.

It is also rumoured that Skype could be within the next group of Android apps that run within Chrome OS. In fact you can find some hacks online to do so already but I wouldn't think they are for the faint hearted.

If you must have Skype then the easiest option is to install a Linux distro as well as Chrome OS and boot into it for Skype.
