Tag Heuer Vs. 2nd hand Omega Watch

    Hello!

I am thinking of purchasing a watch this side of Xmas and in need of some advice.

Initially, I was looking into buying a Tag but an automatic one may be outside my price range. The other option is buying a second hand Omega Automatic, but most 2nd hand watches online don't seem to have papers/box etc

    My budget is around 1K - 1.5K.

I was thinking I might be able to bargain in a jewellers for a nice Tag..or I saw an automatic Longines one for a little over a grand.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

Moved your post into it's own thread so you might get more replies :)

Personally speaking? I don't have the anti TAG vibe of many watch nutters out there, though I would definitely think them overpriced for what you get and would avoid unless there was a specific model I wanted and I got it at a good discount. Omega's are a nicer watch(though they have added to their RRP in the last few years). They're more watch for the money than a similar priced TAG IMH. Longines are cheaper and about on point pricewise, they haven't been inflated like many. Both tend to hold their value more than TAG's too which may be a factor. If I was running a budget of around the 1000 mark, I'd probably look for a used Longines with box and papers, or an Omega without.

I was trying to figure out how you started your own thread..

Thanks for your insight Whibbs! I think I can get a nice F1(white dial and steel strap) entry level Tag for around 1.1k but it is an analogue one. Ideally, I want an Aquaracer/Carrera Automatic but I think they are slightly out of my price range - If I was to get a good deal on one and it cost me nearly €2k I might be able to swing the extra few hundred.

Curious - is this a good time of the year to be buying a watch? Or should I wait until after Xmas in the hope some may be reduced.

    Many thanks

deals come along all the time, there is no best time for watches. There may be some sales in January, but there were also some discounts last friday ( black friday). You may be lucky and find something you want on sale ( i didnt).

Keep an eye on watchrecon .com , its great for second hand deals if you have something specific in mind and monitor it regularly.

Also, check the forums on watchuseek, the ones specific to the brand your interested in (if the forum exists). and of course google is your friend!

I'd agree with FW's take above, though it has been my experience that forum sales are not far off dealer prices and certainly higher than ebay auction prices. That said if buying from a forum, you're getting a watch nut who is much less likely to sell you a heap of junk. Ebay and the like is not for newbies or unwary. Yes you can get bargains, but they're rare and you really have to know your stuff.

As for seasonal variations? I've certainly seen it on ebay auctions. Coming up to Christmas you get more bidders and prices climb, in January that's far less a trend. However as I said, ebay is not for the unwary.

Thanks for the help lads. I went into a jewellers to see some watches last night and I think I have made up my mind. It's a Tag Formula 1 Calibre 5 (white dial, steel strap)- the lady said it was a quartz but pretty sure it's an automatic one. The hands on the dial slid as opposed to tick. I looked at the Tag website and it said it was an automatic watch. I will have to go back and double check to make sure it is..
I prefer the idea of having a new watch with papers/receipt as opposed to getting a more expensive 2nd hand watch. I'm not that familiar with the second hand market so I think I am going to go for the Tag. Also, it is coming in at a really good price too!

    Thanks for all your help

That range I think used to be quartz models when launched but changed to offer automatics: if your watch says "Calibre 5" then that's definitely an automatic movement, no question. Poor from the sales lady not knowing that though!

I actually got a chance to call back today. I dealt with a different lady who said it was 100% a Quartz model, but then was informed it was actually an automatic watch. She was fairly embarrassed to be fair. Good news for me - it's actually the one I wanted and a bonus that it's an automatic model. All I have to do now is part with the cash money.. !!

    How much?

It's going for €1620. Their best price is €1425 but I hope to get a few more quid off that price.

If they won't budge any further on price you might see if they'll throw in a spare strap or something equally of small value.

best of luck, can you throw up a link to the actual watch as I think thats a very good price for an automatic Tag Heuer from a bricks & mortar shop

when I was buying mine, I dont think I seen any Tag automatics for less than 1900eur and I dont think prices have come down since in 2yrs , in fact the particular model I bought went up by about 10%, possibly due to the exchange rates

    I don't think I can post a link until I reach 50 posts?

They only have it advertised in their shop window anyway!

It is a F1 automatic so that's why it might be a few quid cheaper.

Think I might get it a black Calibre 6, I saw it at the weekend and it might age better than the white one! Hopefully getting it at the weekend..

Personally I'd avoid Tag OP. Get a second hand Omega. I just think the quality of the brand, design and re-sale value is not worth the investment.

But up to yourself in the end.

I bought the Tag this week and delighted with the purchase! Don't think I can post a pic...
