    Hi All,

I’m not sure if anyone can help but perhaps you can point me in the right direction …

My mum was having trouble with her gas heating and got a friend of a friend out to look at it in the summer…. It’s an old boiler but has been serviced regularly so shouldn’t be in too bad. Anyway, the guy came and replaced a part (I think it was a system board ?? Does that sound right ??) but whatever he did only worked for a while so he came back an did something else – I’m not sure what – But it has never been 100% since. She paid him by cheque which was cashed but got no invoice and no RGII cert.

Around the end of the summer, I sent him a text asking for a copy of the receipt and the RGII cert cause I was going to get someone else to take a look but the txt went ignored and It slipped off my radar

And now it’s stopped working altogether and the house is freezing !!! I’ve gotten in touch with him again and he’s said he was going to send someone round to take a look which he did. He was supposed to come back with a quote but haven’t heard a peep since last Wednesday.

Now at this point, I’m going to get someone else to look at it but I’m so annoyed that this plumber would leave my poor mum, or anyone for that matter, in the lurch like this. Am I right in saying that he should have at least provided the RGII cert when he did any work on the gas boiler. Is not providing the cert something he could be reported for ??

    Thanks in advance

Check the Rgi register and see if he's even registered. If not he broke the law and should be reported

I did look at the RGII complaints procedure and this is what it says

In respect of this complaints procedure RGII is concerned solely with the safety and
technical standard of gas work carried out by the registered installer. RGII's complaints
    procedure does not
    deal with:

Contractual or commercial matters of any kind, such as the price charged for work or
whether correct payment has been made to the registered installer for work completed.

Complaints about aspects of work which are not directly related to gas s
    afety, such as the
    performance of a gas appliance/installation

So i'm still not sure ... I thought if there were any plumbers on here they might know ???

I'm a plumber and I know that you cannot work on a gas boiler unless you are certified to do so. So if your fella is not registered, irregardless of whether he broke or fixed it, he still broke the law and must be reported

The issuing of certs is not a contractual matter, it is a requirement of RGII as a member to have issued one, so it is a valid complaint, the invoice issue is for the revenue

I'm not having a go at the OP here but I can't understand anyone handing over money without a receipt. I don't do boilers at all so I can't be 100% sure about them but most things that are repaired that require a part, the part has a warranty. In showers the part might have a 6 months warranty ( 2 years for Aqualisa). The warranty is only valid with a receipt. The receipt details the work done & names the new part that is covered by a warranty.

I know I keep saying it but you shouldn't let a tradesman into your house without proof of insurance. You shouldn't accept discounts for cash jobs & in the case of Gas boilers he must be RGI. Electricians working on your fusebox must be REC & you should get a cert.

I agree with you sleeper ... But this was a "friend" of my brother's who was supposedly trustworthy .... If it was me, he wouldn't have got a penny but that's all spilled milk now ...

Anyway, I've done a bit of googling on the guy and he is a registered gas installer so that's something. He's replaced parts and then when they didn't work he said it was something else .... After replacing the system boards twice he's now decided it's the gas valve ...

It's this sort of messing that drives me around the bend !!

Ok so to be fair, he could have genuinely forgotten to give you a cert. As for problem solving on the boiler itself, sometimes you can get a gas boiler that will drive you nuts. It seems they can have a mind of their own now and again.

He's been asked on three separate ocassions since for the cert and still no sign of it ... !!

As for the boiler driving him nuts - well maybe so ... But he was supposed to call on Monday to see what type of valve was needed and we haven't heard a peep from him ... I phone call wouldn't kill him !!

In that case I'd get somebody else

Its a Baxi Back boiler ...

I managed to get someone yesterday evening ... Got him from the RGII list, called him, he said he'd be there in half an hour - HE SHOWED UP ON TIME !!!!!!!!!!!! - He said that it looked like that parts were taken out of the boiler and not put back in properly - he tightened a few bit and now it's fixed !!

But I will be chasing the first guy for the cert and if i don't get it, i'll be on to RGII - I suspect he did the job as a cash job so didn't keep any records but we'll see ........
