    Hi there,
So sorry but i am a complete novice to this so if anyone could answer my query in the simplest of terms it would be greatly appreciated.
We have a tevion tv and a TRIAX box. Now according to the tv it can record onto a USB, so off i go and buy a USB stick, plug it in, try to record something and it says "please insert a USB Drive". What am i doing wrong?? Should i have got something else apart from the USB stick?? I did ask the guy in the shop and he said that would suffice.
Sorry if this sound so daft but its doing my head in. Thanks for any help thats given :-)

I don't think any model of TV will record a program onto a hard drive and certainly not a basic make like Tevion. A lot of digital decoders like the ones that handle Saorview and/or Freesat are able to record to an attached hard drive. Can your Triax do this? Check the manual, certainly you may assume the TV can not do it.

Did the guy in the shop where you bought the hard drive claim that you could just plug it into the TV and start recording? A well known UK electrical chain perhaps?

I think there are quite a few that will. Certainly some Samsung & LG models.

what kinda of triax box have you, on some such as the triax combo tsc114 you plug the usb pen into the box and can record from that. Tevion is aldi's brand of tv's as far as I know....not sure if they record or not some just playback picture files, music and some movie formats etc.

Most recent TVs will do so, I understand ...... certainly the lower priced Walker does, although the resulting recording is only playable on that TV and not on a PC due to some form of protection.

The TV-USB recording will record a TV station you have tuned in with the TV tuner.

Is that what you are attempting to do ..... or are you attempting to record what is coming from the Triax box?

Also you might have to 'set up' the USB device through the TV menu before it is active.

    EDIT

If you supply the model number of the TV more specific replies might be possible.

Could very well be that it expects a USB drive with a certain minimum capacity.

Many TVs have PVR feature now - but with my LG TV there's a minimum drive size of I think 40GB required for recording to - any drive inserted under that size isn't recognised for this feature.

Try a portable drive if you have one rather than a USB stick. The fact it's asking you to insert a USB drive suggests to me that the TV does have PVR capability. I use this non stop on my LG TV including series recording and it's an AMAZING feature to have. No extra boxes needed!

You say the TV says it will record to USB, so the most likely issue in this case (having supplied a USB drive) is that the drive isn't formatted appropriately.

Read on a couple more lines in the TV manual and it should say the drive needs to be formatted to something like FAT, FAT32, NTFS, etc . . . Once you know what format you need the drive to be in, google "how to format a drive" and you will get an idea of what is required.

Once it's formatted appropriately, stick it back in the telly and try again.

You can get 48 inch smart Sony Tvs with 3 Tuners (Terrestial, Cable, Sat) that will record to and play media from USB for under €500 now.
