I borrowed a car today to collect my kids and my own car would not start.
I have insursnce to drive other cars third party as well as my own car. I knew the tax on the vehicle I borrowed was up since July took the chance to drive 15 mins away n surprise surprise was stopped by the guards. Explained wasn't my car but admitted I new tax had been up n would take the fine. Came home and was getting my insurance and lisence to drop to the station (was requested in 10 days) n whrn I took my liscence off my visor in my car realised it's out since June. I don't remember having any notification. I honestly thought it was in date my own car has insurance. Nct. The lot. What should I do how much trouble will I be in over the license been out.

Renew it. And set a reminder on your phone for 10 years from now.

Thanks but renewing it is not the issue. Will I not be in trouble when I go to produce an out if date document within the ten days. The renewal date will be after the date I was stopped (today) if I just produce the new one. Is this not as big a deal as I'm thinking it is :-(

Oh yeah, you'll likely be prosecuted for driving without a licence.

lil ol me bring your licence to the station and explain the situation to the guard. 99 times out of a 100 it's recognised as a simple mistake. You can still renew your licence without having to resit the test so make sure you have a booking appointment for NDLS with you.

I actually can't believe I missed it been renewed I have been upset all evening over this. I just hope the guards sees it's a genuine mistake. It's not like I'm off the road or am not allowed to drive. I simply thought it was in date

Well you are not allowed drive without a valid licence and I thought it would also make your insurance invalid since technically you don't hold a valid driving licence.

No. In Ireland your insurance is not invalidated by an expired driving licence. You don't even need to have a current licence to renew a policy you only need to have held a driving licence for that class of vehicle in the past and not be currently disqualified.
    UK is different.

eh.....maybe it doesn't on your own policy.

But I know someone who was driving someone elses car (as was OP) with an expired license and crashed it. Insurance only paid out third party as technically it was driving without a license.

Well I know that even with a valid licence I only have third party to drive another car. But by law that's fine. I'm still insured. My insurance company had confirmed this when I took out my policy. Ugh I will just go station in the morning n hope for the best. 😔

like already mentioned, if you're nice and polite the gards can make this go away quietly. Good luck!!!

I should have clarified I was replying on the understanding that brembo26 believed that an expired licence means no insurance in any circumstance which is untrue with mandatory minimum third party cover.
However if you are driving under a "drive other cars" extension an insurer can indeed stipulate a current licence as a requirement for this optional cover. Some such as Liberty require a current licence, others such as AXA don't.

I just checked the owner still has me named as a driver on their insurance too. So I can produce both Certs.
All this speculation is doing my head no favours I'll have to bite the bullet n be more careful in future

Really? I was stopped a year or so a go... gave the Garda my licence. ....he laughed....quiet loud.....handed me back my licence....... nearly a year outta date. Kinda embarrassing. But he was cool about it. advised me to get it sorted and produce it to local station.

Discretion is no longer as prevalent as it use to be. The media has ensured that.

Very few policies give fully comp when driving other vehicles so IMO even if the licence was in date they'd still only have covered the 3rd party. That's the risk you take when you borrow a vehicle can you afford to replace it?
