    Hi all

    I have my NCT tomorrow.
It's an old car (2001) but in good shape so fingers crossed.

I've never had to get an NCT on a car before, can anyone tell me what basic prep I should do tonight?

I have checked that all the bulbs are working, tonight I will check the oil and water and give the car a hoover, empty the boot - anything else I need to do?

    Thanks

as they say, the best pre NCT test is the NCT test.

i just check the basics before going in, to make sure they test it. i copied this list from the NCT site:

    http://www.ncts.ie/q13.html
Your car has adequate oil and water.

The boot is empty and seats are clear of personal belongings such as removable baby seats. If the baby seat is left in the car for the NCT, it will be checked that it is fitted correctly.

The vehicle is reasonably clean (especially the under body).

The wheel hubcaps are removed (only in the case where the wheel nuts are not visible) and the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.

The engine is in a fit state to be tested e.g. Cam belt/timing belt. You may be asked to sign a disclaimer at the test centre.

Seat belts and clips are fully visible.

Your registration plates comply with current regulations.

NCTS recommend that you have your lights checked and set prior to the NCT.

Please ensure the person who brings the car for inspection brings identification with them in the form of a driving licence as failure to provide the required identification will result in the vehicle not being issued an NCT certificate at the time of testing.

Please ensure your vehicle is at a normal operating temperature prior to arriving at the test centre for inspection.

Don't forget to bring your vehicle registration book, registration certificate or licensing certificate and your test fee!

Please ensure you remove all valuables/personal belongings from the vehicle prior to the NCT.
If the above items are not taken care of, NCTS may be unable to test your vehicle.

To ensure you don't miss your appointment, we recommend that you plan to arrive 10 minutes early or you may have to re-book for another day and pay a cancellation fee.

Thanks, for some reason I missed that on the NCT page!
I was going to pay for a pre-NCT test with a mechanic but then thought stuff it, may as well just put it through and hope for the best, if it fails at least I will be told exactly what I need to get fixed.

Pre NCT tests are a total racket. Avoid.

take it for a LOOOOOOng drive just before dropping it off.
gets engine good and hot, better chance of passing emission test.

Don't bother with pretest. Just do the list posted by Toyotafanboi and that will suffice.
And make sure engine has been at operating temp for at least 20 mins before you arrive.
    Good luck

Check the tyres all have the e symbol on them. It's quite likely one of the tyres is an old 'bargain'.
