Approve / refuse carers leave

Can a company legally refuse carers leave? I applied to leave to care for my special needs child, was told verbally it was approved and then told they would give me a career break instead.

There are a lot of downsides taking a career break and the reason I was given is that the company think carers leave is only to mind people over 18.

The citizens advice website says a career break of under 13 weeks can be refused but doesn't state if longer terms can be.

    Any ideas?

Contact Citizeninformation and find out in writing; assuming your company is wrong they'll most likely change their view as you said they approved it preliminary.

Am waiting for them to check it.

It doesn't sound like your company has any say in the matter, once you've got approval from the Department of Social Protection. Is that in writing?

Unless you are wanting less than 13 weeks, in which case it sounds like they can decline.
