    Hi

My boiler won't start unless I hit the reset button on the thermostat every time, it's a new problem and only started this morning, any idea what's going on ?

Either a dodgy stat, dodgy pump, motorised valve or your system is sluged up badly.

Could be sludge as it was quite low before I filled it, I suppose it's best to get a professional out to look tomorrow thanks for replying

Are your radiators heating after you reset boiler.did you bleed the system after you topped it up

Ya the rads are as hot as ever, I didn't bleed the system, what would that entail ? It won't come on from the clock, but when I hit the reset button underneath the thermostat it comes on and stays on and heats water and rads as normal

Your normal boiler stat could be faulty and your boiler would then be cutting out on the high limit stat.

As has been said earlier can be all manor of reasons.

A sticking zone valve can cause this, sludge, or just a dodgy overheat stat.

Boiler type can have a lot to do with it as well as they age. LWC boilers are very susceptible to overheating due to scale or sludge, but will tend to be very noisy. Cast boilers don't tend to be as 'fragile' when dealing with scale or sludge but any boiler in the wrong circumstance can succumb to the dreaded scale/sludge.

A few small tests can identify how the system is running. After the system has been run up to temperature, you can try these to narrow down the fault.

    1. Turn off the timer/programmer, does the boiler shut down but the pump continue to run ? If so it indicates the pump overrun is working (if one is required) If not that could be the cause of the stat tripping.

    2. Turn off the timer/programmer, the boiler remains on. Suggests a sticky microswitch on a zone valve.

    3. Do you have a bypass, does it need adjusting. Do you have TRV's, on a system with no bypass.

    4. Is the pump running well, maybe its loosing performance as it gets hot.

    5. The boiler stat could just have lost calibration (technical term fcuked)

These are just a few things I would be looking at but of course a professional will be the way to go.
