A Deportivo La Coruña supporter has died after he was injured when dozens of rival fans clashed near the stadium before the club’s La Liga match at Atlético Madrid on Sunday.

The 43-year-old fan, who was not identified by name, had to be fished out of the freezing Manzanares river near Atlético’s Vicente Calderón stadium and suffered cardiac arrest, hypothermia and head injuries, emergency services said.

Hospital sources later said he had died shortly after 2pm local time after failing to respond to efforts to revive him. Eleven other people were treated for mostly minor injuries, including one female police officer with a fractured hand.

Full details are not clear yet as to what happened but to end up dumped in a river is fairly shocking.

There's a lot about this that we don't know yet but nobody should ever go to a football match and not come back. Needless.

Forget the politics Frente are just scum. To throw a man who was knocked out into a river was one of the most cowardly things to do. RIP "Jimmy" he leaves behind a wife and four year old daughter.

If Atleti are serious then they'll ban the entire Frente group from the Calderon to make an example of them.

Won't hold my breath about that though.

Just for a bit of balance, this man was in the Riazor Blues, Deportivo's Ultras, and more specifically, the Los Suaves, the 'hooligan' more violent faction of the Ultras.

What drives a 43 year old man with a young daughter to drive 5 hours to Madrid on a Sunday for a scrap I don't know, but its still very sad and has no place in football, or anywhere for that matter.

As an Atleti fan, I'm disappointed by Cerezo's comments. He's basically come out and said it didn't happen at the stadium so it's not Atleti's responsibility. Ok, I can see his point but something should be done like at Barca or Madrid where their seats were reassigned and they were effecitvely broken up. Apparently, they've tried doing this on a small scale but it needs to be stepped up to show that this carry on can't be happening.

Also, an Ateltico fans bar in Seville last night was attacked by Sevilla ultras in response.

I think he is right. While the club need to ban anyone found to be involved, support any investigation in any way possible, and condemn it outright, in the end it is a police issue and one that needs to be dealt with severely.

I don't think football clubs can be getting involved in murder cases just because they were carried out in the name of said club by people who would have found another reason to do it anyway.

Interesting level of outcry in comparison to the death of Iñigo Cabacas. The people involved here haven’t helped themselves. Blades, 5 on 1 and kicking people while they are down. But as usual the media and the authorities are already engaged in arse-covering and “we knew nothing” quotes with impressive haste.

You most remember RB are antifa while FA82 are right wing nationalists so politics has a lot to play in this incident and a lot of bad blood between both groups too. Both sides knew what could happen as both groups carried knifes and other weapons.

"Jimmy" was well known and seen as a leader so he was probably picked out. Very sad story.

We'll see if it's any more than bluster, but

AS English ‏@English_AS 45m45 minutes ago LFP chief Javier Tebas at Anti-Violence Commission in Madrid on Monday: "It's the end for the ultras. We're going to put a stop to them."

Yeah - a day after some high-ups claimed they "didn't want the game to go ahead". If you don't want the game to go ahead, forget about protocol and take the players off the ****in pitch, simple as. Don't wait to get a form filled out.

And then today there was an Antiviolence meeting and our friend Villar (who you might remember doesn't mind a bit of the owl racism) and the Atletico president didn't show for their seats. Probably no foie on the lunch menu. The blazers will cover their holes as usual. None of them actually give a **** about a dead football fan.
