Santa is bringing us a new TV! I don't have a load of money - 400 quid - and want to get the best 40 inch I can get for that.
We have a satellite dish and a freesat box, but I'm wondering about the freeview tvs - don't they just work in the UK?

A lot of Freeview TVs are Saorview approved too. If you have a particular make/model in mind & aren't sure about it, post the make & model no. here.

I have no particular model in mind yet - what I want to know is if they retailers are being a bit tricky dicky offering FREEVIEW in Ireland. I thought FREEVIEW was a UK service. At the moment I am using an AMIKO set-top box, and get my freesat and saorview channels through that.
Does a freeview tv connect to a satellite or an aerial - I understood it was an aerial.

    Here's a LGfreeview TV LG LB630V

Freeview = aeriel connection (UK terrestrial tv)
Freesat = sat dish connection (UK satellite channels)

Thanks for the clarification. How do I refer to the free satellite channels we get in RI?

Freeview is the UK terrestrial service, their equivalent of Saorview. Plenty of TVs, such as the LG you linked to, are approved for both.

Some also have satellite tuners built in, with Freesat branding in the case of some Samsung & Panasonic models.

freeview uk is by aerial and are there no stickers on box stating may not work in eire depending on location.cousin living in skerries can pick up bbc and itv on saorview, why not buy an irish approved one.later if needed could add boxes if needed.

    as said above freesat boxes.

Free to Air or FTA in short

They're just free-to-air satellite channels. If you get a Freesat branded receiver, you can access the add-on Freesat features for the UK channels signed up to Freesat, such as a 7 day EPG, automatic retuning when needed & a UK postcode database to aid in setting up.

Amiko do not make Freesat boxes.

BBC & ITV are not on Saorview anywhere. It's a Freeview transmission, any Saorview TV can handle Freeview standard def. at least.

They're not really 'offering' it, although it can be received reliably in some parts of ROI, mainly near the NI border.

Thanks, everyone. I'l look for freesat, so I can get the 7 day epg element.
Can anyone recommend a well-priced 40 inch freesat tv?

You can see the TVs currently listed on the Freesat site here.

    BLAUPUNKT BLA40/133Z

Does this one have a freesat tuner built in?

It doesn't list any satellite tuner. (Would be DVB-S/S2.)

Freesat features are nothing to do with the tuner, it's just licensed software that enables receivers to access the EPG data, UK postcode database, channel updates: features that make satellite viewing more user-friendly.

An aerial. Satellites are 23,000 miles away.
