Received this a week ago but only setting it up now. Looks like a great bit of kit. Total cost was approx ~€85, now I can finally give my Fathers Sat Nav back to him after only a year and a half :p Thanks OP!

Would this be better than Google Maps on an iphone? What are the benefits?

Bought this particular model in the States & picked up some EU mapping for it on ebay for $10usd (loads via SD card).

Have used it in the US, Belgium, Netherlands & the Czech Republic over the last few months & it hasn't skipped a beat.

Just out of curiousity, what's the benefit of bluetooth on a sat nav?

I was writing a long reply to this post but then decided to put all the info in a blog post instead. So for anyone interested: http://www.vantasks.ie/blog/garmin-vs-google-maps-navigation

Thanks for this - very helpful.

I currently have a Mio Spirit 689 Deluxe collecting dust. Would the Garmin in this thread be significantly better?

Probably - I've found anything other than the "big two" to be dirt as goes in-car navigation; and this has lifetime map updates of good mapping data (Navteq)

Nearly all Garmin units can be 'converted' to international if you need to - I used my antique 205w to guide me around Oregon earlier in the year with the latest US maps on it.
