    Thanks!

Your build looks fine but I'd recommend just getting windows from reddit - That's your choice though obviously. :P

Also, you'll have to go for a different power-supply. That one only has two 6pins for your graphics card. The gigabyte Gaming G1 has an 8pin and a 6pin.

    Power supply: http://www.hardwareversand.de/en/600+-+700+Watts/47363/Thermaltake+Berlin+630W.article

Also, the money you would save on getting windows from Reddit could be put towards getting an unlocked version of the processor (just to leave your options open for overclocking in the future) :)

Thanks for the quick reply and good spot on the power supply!

For the unlocked version of the processor is there any downside at all? If not it's less than €20 difference so probably worth it just to keep my options open.

Not a single downside. Just means that it'll be unlocked. :)

Why not go for the ~€30 cheaper AsRock Pro 3 version of the motherboard instead of the Extreme 4? The only my real difference is the better sli support which your chosen psu isn't suitable let for anyway.

Because buying a new psu is cheaper than replacing a motherboard if he does decide to go for SLI?

Fair point. If that's a long term goal (sli upgrade path) it's hard to justify not throwing another 30 quid on an 1100 budget though and throw in a decent 750w psu for same reason.

Thanks for the feedback on the motherboard. SLI isn't on my plans at the moment but for the sake of €30 its worth having the option in the long term.

Any recommendations if I wanted to go for a 750w psu?

Here's how I would spend the money if it was me.

Firstly get Windows from Reddit for ~ €16.

Secondly, to get all the prices I have, you need to run each component through https://skinflint.co.uk/eu/ and follow the link to HWVD and add to basket from there.

Thirdly, I've added an 850w PSU that I can personally attest to as I had the 750w flavour for a year and a half. It scored 9/10 from Jonnyguru who is the final authority on PSU reviews. This will be more that sufficient if you want to SLI in the future. I was actually running a pair of power hungry R9 290s and an OC'd 3570k off that XFX 750w for 6 - 8 months no problem before I upgraded to a G2 1000w.

Fourthly, I've added a nice aftermarket CPU cooler so your CPU not only runs cooler and quieter, it gives you a lot of overclocking headroom if you decide to go down that route, which you will tbh as OCing is criminally easy and safe these days.

Finally, I change the HDD you selected to a pair of WD Blue 1TBs. Same 7200rpm speed as the 2TB Red Pro but about €30 cheaper. Swap em if you prefer.

Including shipping at €11.99, you're looking at €1080.26 so you'll have a few €'s change from the €1100 budget including Windows.

:EDIT: Throw in another SATA 3 cable if you go with the two HDDs!

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, its worth saving a little here and there to stretch the budget elsewhere alright!

From my reading around it looked like the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 was very highly recommended but its out of stock on hardwareversand.de and amazon.co.uk now (with no expected date). Looks like its available on amazon.de though so I might try that route or is there a comparable card recommended?

No, not me! Damn, I'm under pressure to make up my mind now :D

:EDIT: Ok, the last one was me :) Nothing like the pressure of "One left in stock" to make up your mind quickly! :D

Overclockers.co.uk has gtx 970 in stock around 340 euro delivered.

A good 600w PSU will run an sli set up of the gtx 970. 970 max draw is about 150w. Sli leaves 300 w remaining for pc which runs about 150 - 200 tops that is being over shooting. Future tech is using less and less power.

800w is overkill but your call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,265 ✭✭✭..Brian..

Absolutely true, you could save about €18 dropping down to a 650w PSU but when we're under budget already I wouldn't. Who knows what configurations will be thrown in there in the future.

    Thanks for everyones input!

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on the order but I just realized one (probably stupid) question. I assume the PSUs will come with a Euro plug seeing as its from Germany? If so is it just a case of using an adapter? Or are you better off picking up an 3-pin plug as well (I assume they're all the standard PC plug connectors)?

Nope not stupid. The old fat ps3 one will do. If you know the kind I am talking about. Can pick them up most places.

Brian, I have to ask about the Reddit thing.
If you're building a new Pc how is getting a widows key applicable because you can't install it :P

The Windows ISOs are freely (legally) available for download. You can download the ISO, make a bootable USB key, install windows and then use the product key from reddit.

I downloaded Windows 7 for a new PC build earlier in the week:

I would definitely not recommend this PSU. I bought one for a new gaming build, and literally, it lasted one hour.

Check out the reviews on amazon.co.uk. There are a lot of reports of faulty units that only last weeks & months, and a few that die under any sort of load like mine did. I'd avoid the Corsair C series.
