I'm thinking of buying a fairly fresh Passat edition R possibility a 2013 or even a 2014 if I see one reasonably priced with a SIMI Dealer. I was looking at 2013 (1) with 41,500 km 1.6 for 25,500. Is this price about right. I was thinking that surely in January with the new passat out second hand passat will be less desirable and more difficult to sell with people trading in old passat for new ones? Some of the cars I was looking at have been up of website for at least 3 months since I started looking, possibility longer. Taking the above information into account, how much could I be expected to pay in January? I would have no probably walking away from a dealer if the price wasn't right. What kind of warranty would a 2013 entitle me to. Thanks in advance.

Nobody can tell you really what you will expect to pay but prices do not drop straight away as soon as Jan 1st arrives. It will take a little time for the new model to establish itself. Best time imo is March/April when dealers have a glut of old model Passats on their forecourts taken in as part exchange against the new ones. It's around then you will see them more keen to shift the old model.

Also I would not pay over the top for the R Line. It was a run out special edition but the reality is that second hand they will probably fetch similar money to the Comfortline. Warranty should be the balance of the original VW 3 year warranty but given it's a 2013 car I would expect at least 12 months minimum. So it if it has 10 months VW warranty left on it then I would expect the dealer selling it to offer an extra 2 months warranty minimum on such a new car.

BTW the 1.6 litre is underpowered in the Passat, it would be worth trying to find a 2.0 litre, running costs are similar.

thanks for the advice appreciated. I like the interior of the R- Line, i would probably upgrade to radio part and put in the a sat nav system like the highline has. I have actually seen the odd r line with the highline sat nav system in it. I think i'll look into purchasing in mid January test the water, hopefully with the new passat, the 2013 been a 2 year old car in January the dealer might be keen to get rid for decent price. Will bear in mind the 2.0 version.

Possibly the best engine on the road today is the VAG 2 litre 140hp diesel. It's incredibly economical and gives you sufficient power to enjoy your car and not be a drag when you need the little extra oomph.
