I got a painter in 3 weeks ago to paint my sitting room. I poninted out some settlement cracks and he arrived a day before to fill them. He finished the job but now, 3 weeks on, the cracks are starting to show again, through the paint. Does anyone reckon I have any recourse or it is tough on my part? I would have thought he should have dug out the cracks but I wasn't there and only saw them filled. He is a repuatable painter and has a big enough business.

Suppose I am wondering if this should have been dealt with by him or is it my problem!?

I suppose a lot depends on why the cracks are there ! If there's movement (even slight ) the cracks would be back very quick , there may be an issue with the filler he used (not flexible enough ? ) but to be fair the guy's a painter not a structural engineer -

You should have addressed the crack before employing the painter. the Painter has done all he can do to deal with the situation. If the crack is a moving with expansion and contraction then that's not really his fault.
These type of Cracks can be difficult to get rid of.
Best to get a Plasterer to come and have a look at it and probably stitch the crack and then re plaster.
