Questions about Marriage

    Hi,

I am with my fiancee for nearly 10 years now. At the moment we both live in Mexico. We are thinking of getting married soon (1-3 years), but have a few questions before we do, that I hope you can answer.

    - What do you need to do to get married in Ireland with a Mexican?
    - Would she need to be a resident or could she just be on a holiday?
    - Is the marriage recognised in Mexico or elsewhere in Europe?
    - Does she have to take my surname?
    - Can a civil ceremony be done or must it be in a church?
    - If we have kids in Ireland, after we are married who would have more rights?

    Regards,
    Darren

    - What do you need to do to get married in Ireland with a Mexican?
I'd look up the GRO website

    - Would she need to be a resident or could she just be on a holiday?
    ditto

    - Is the marriage recognised in Mexico or elsewhere in Europe?
Opposite sex marriages are usually recognized in most countries. So if you have a legal marriage in one country, most other countries will recognise it as valid
    - Does she have to take my surname?
Surnames are a matter of custom. Irish women, marrying Irish men ca change or not change their surname as they wish, and can revert again if they wish. I'd imagine Mexicanas can do the same too. In Ireland, Dunno about Mexico
    - Can a civil ceremony be done or must it be in a church?
You can have a civil ceremony, either in a registry office, or in places licensed by the hse to hold civil weddings or in most christian churches

    - If we have kids in Ireland, after we are married who would have more rights?
    The Children, hopefully.
