    Hey all,
Am getting a friend who is coming home from Canada to bring me back an iPhone as they are much cheaper abroad than in Ireland. Will there be a problem bringing it back in the plane? Would import tax be liable to be paid on the phone on entry to Ireland? If so, could that be bypassed by taking the phone out of its packaging and carrying around as a personal device?

    you pay vat

if it is to be left in the country you pay vat

make sure its in carry on as most electronics are stolen

its very rare they will be stopped at customs

as they search the bags coming off the plane

There are Heavy Penalties for Smuggling

If you are caught smuggling you may have a financial penalty imposed on you, your goods may be seized, you may be prosecuted or a combination of all of these measures may be applied to you.

If you notice anything suspicious or if you have any information on drug smuggling or smuggling of any kind tell a Customs Officer or contact:

    Freephone 1800-295 295

Don't Ignore It – Report It!

Unsure what you mean here, are you saying most electronics brought in checked luggage are stolen goods?

I really doubt customs will get excited over 1 phone.

That's what I thought munwin, boards people tend to preach the law like they're the ones enforcing it
My question though is would it be ok to bring it in the box unopened, or open it and carry in pocket to be sure?

Its a phone for god's sake. Every single person going through the airport is going to have at least one phone with them. I would take it out of it's original packaging if your worried.

Not sure about this. I've been stopped twice by customs, asked where I'm coming from and when I said somewhere in the US, they asked if I was bringing back any electronics - iPads, iPhones. Luckily I wasn't on those trips (had on previous trips) - so I don't know what would have happened if I did have something. But they are definitely on the lookout for electronics costing over the import limit.

How would anyone know its not his personal phone if its not in a box? He could well have up to three phones in his personal luggage for personal, work, and secret affair use. Dump the box. Take a photo of the receipt.

If he needs the box or receipt then he could also just pop them in the post for home.
