Hard Drive Connection Query

Hi all

I had an external hard drive but I think the cable input port has stopped working . I basically just want to get the data off it so I have taken it out of the case but now am in need of a cable to connect it to my laptop. There seems to be loads of different ones/versions online so am a bit unsure of what exactly I need. Any help is much appreciated!

edit: you might get a cable cheaper, but you'd need to add a power supply separately, that you wouldn't need for a desktop PC

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I have an old desktop I could you for just a cable. Any recommendations on what I'd need??
To be honest I just want to get the data off the disk, I'm not too worried after that.

On the old pc, you can prob just disconnect the cables from the cd/dvd drive and plug them into the harddrive.

SATA hard disks appeared on desktops a while before SATA optical drives. Open up the desktop you have OP and take a look

Hey. I opened up my old desktop there (and when I say old I mean old, it's prob over 10 years, not used anymore at all) and the attached pic is what the cd drive looks like. These cables dont fit the hard drive so i presume I will need to go another route (cable and power supply??).

It includes an adapter cable from the power plug that worked the CD drive on you desktop, to run the SATA HDD
