Can I request my x-ray?

I had an x-ray done yesterday, and it showed that I need quite a bit of work done. Two extractions, a root canal and an implant or bridge.

Would it be standard practice for folks to request their xrays so they can go and price the work elsewhere?

What's the usual policy of dental practices regarding giving out patients records?

    Thanks for any info.

If it is a digital x-ray, no problem, just email them your request and they will email a copy back to you. But note, like all dentists I get emails all the time with X-rays attached from people looking for second opinions and quotes, and like all dentists I just delete them without reply. You can only get an accurate second opinion/quote after your teeth are visually examined by the dentist in the chair which means you pay for each opinion you get.

If it was a film x-ray then it will not be possible to give you the X-ray as the original must be retained by the clinic for medico legal reasons. You can have a film x ray copied but it must be sent to a specialist laboratory and it is expensive.

Most desktop scanners will do a reasonable job of scanning a film X-ray although it may not be of diagnostic quality. You are entitled to a copy of you X-rays however the clinic is entitled to charge for the copy also.
