520d vs x5 vs discovery

Long story cut short, I live in the uk but do 3-4 trips a year between canary wharf and rural county cork!

I've a good contact with BMW uk and I usually change my car annually for very little cost. I've had 4 f10 BMW 520d cars in the past few 4 years and find them to be fantastic .

In 2015 I wAs planning to opt for a 4x4 for space and occasional 7 seat usage. The car will probably never go off road in complete honesty .

Brand loyalty would swing me towards an x5 3.0 m sport with 7 seats .

However the discovery hse is a fab car also. It's a real 7 seater, air suspension is nice but am concerned about reliability .

Without going into complex sums, both cars would cost me the same to buy one off. Trading the cars thereafter annually the land rover works out about 1k pa cheaper, but this is offset by the higher running costs.

So, the question is - would you buy the LR or the x5 ?

Or am I mad and should just buy another 5 ?

    Thanks !

i Think you should buy another f10 but maybe of a different variant,i.e a touring or a 530 just to have a bit of a change.
No advantage to you to buy the 4x4 unless you just want one.

Unless you really need 7 seats, I would stick with the 5 but like Blingrhino said would maybe up spec. I think in the UK the 530/535 can be got for not much more than 520 especially if you can do good deals with BMW.

If you are buying a new disco then the reliability should not be a huge concern given that it will be under warranty presumably for the entire period you will own it. It will be far more expensive to run than a 520 e.g. Tyres, fuel and servicing.

However I would still go for one if I was in your position. Otherwise a 530/535 touring if you don't really need the 7 seats. Not overly gone on the new x5 esp since they've cheapened it further with a 2 litre 4 cylinder diesel.

Thanks all - useful to confirm what I expected to hear ! Given my desire to have relatively cheap motoring another f10 will be the most likely option !

If your getting a big discount on the Beemers I'd stick with them - the X5 2.0d is meant to be very good - should be similar performance to your own machine and will keep its value very well - its the same engine thats in the 525d

As another poster said maybe go with the f10 Touring if you want a little more space - you will find come resale that the demand is v high for the estates, especially in auto, so it shouldn't really increase your overall motoring cost
