Ford Grand C Max vs Mazda CX5

I have a Grand C Max which I want to trade in for a new car. I have been very happy with it except that I think it is a bit under powered. I've got a good trade in offer, and while mine is the Irish basic 95 ps, the standard in UK is 115 ps - I could get this for €1k extra.

I also checked out the Mazda 5, but dismissed it as being a bit dated, but took a spin in the CX5 while I was there.....fabulous to drive - I loved it and I have a friend who loves his. It would cost me €4k more than the 115ps Grand C Max.

I am lucky enough to be able to afford the CX5 but I am wondering how it would compare on things like cost of servicing, and trade in value in the future. The C Max has held its value very well, and I was surprised at the offer I got against the CX5.

    Any thoughts woud be appreciated.

Recently bought the CX-5. Was looking to trade up my Avensis to the RAV. Test drove the RAV and was so disappointed in it. Passes the Mazda garage on the way home and popped in for a look and a quick spin. Bought it from a different garage the following week. The difference was night and day, love love love my CX-5. I would suggest you shop around the dealerships as the difference in price was a couple of thousand!!

C Max and Grand C Max are about to get a facelift similar to what the Focus has just received.

I think I prefer the current styling

I like the current CX5, that one seems subtle enough but the grille looks a little bit blander on the facelift

Interior seems improved as well. Really like the current Mazda styling, but did feel that the old interior on this or the 6 didn't look great.

Didn't realise the C-Max was in for a facelift - maybe that is why I was offered such a good trade in.....for the hell of it, I asked about the S Max, but trade in allowance was quite a bit lower.

Any thoughts on the likely depreciation/second hand value of the Mazda vs the Ford?

The S Max has been around since 2006 and is about to be replaced by an all new model soon too. You would want to be getting a very good deal on the current model to offset the future heavy depreciation once the new model comes out.

Mazdas generally loose a good bit in depreciation too but the CX-5 is a good car and they are in small supply so depreciation should be average for the class on them. Really depends on how long you plan on keeping the car though.

The current C-Max has been around since 2010, so would be due a facelift, if not an all new model. I did nothing like this well trading in my old model C-Max for my present one, so I would be nervous about getting caught like that again. I would not normally go for the CX5 type car, but took a spin as a friend has one - fabulous car and has good specs. I'm very tempted.

One of the garages reckons it would only cost me € 3000 next year to trade up to a 152. Dunno how that works for you on depreciation. I never think of it when buying a car, maybe more me the fool!! I would deffo take the Mazda over a ford, had a 12 Focus and hated it, traded it in after 6 months.

Wow - brilliant if true! Is that 142 trading up to 152?

Yes, said it was in great demand but then again they would tell you anything to flog a car!!

Car salesmen.......yep, always take what they say with a handfull of salt. Off to meet a friend who has a CX5 and will park it beside my C-Max - I want to compare space/size.

I have yet to hear anything bad about the CX5, but then I have found the C-Max great as well. They are quite different cars, so the comparison is tricky enough.

Yes, but it's a Ford, so there's a good chance the new one will be worse than the existing one.

Looks more evolutionary than revolutionary. I presume the underpinnings are from the new Mondeo however.

So, only 2 years old, but American, against the current ones nearly 9 years old, but European. And of course the current one has had fresh engines, which will be similar in the new.

Looks very similar to the existing one.

One plus for the S Max is they are in hot demand second hand. People love the cabin space apparently. Three full seats across the back. Great for baby seats.

Someone pointed out to me that the CX5 doesn't seem to have a heated windscreen - that is standard on the CMax, and as the CX5 is much higher spec generally, I would have expected it to have the heated windscreen. Anyone out there with a CX5 who could know this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Not all car manufacturers fit heated front windscreens irrespective of their spec.

Don't think so Vienne86, rear screen alright but then again it could have but haven't found it yet!! Female here so, I just about know how to turn on the car, lol....

Heated windscreens are only coming in now to other manufacturers other than Ford (and Volvo which was Ford ownes) as they had the patent.

Just checked with a friend who owns one (female too, but liked gadgets!) and apparently CX5 doesn't have it. Not a serious issue for me as I have a car port.

I think the CX5 might win over the CMax this time, but I might just take a look at the VW Tiguan too.

The Tiguan is ancient at this stage and being replaced by a new model sometime next year. You would want to be getting a super deal to consider one.

Thanks for that - hadn't realised it was that old. VW's trade in very well - I had several - but the reliability reputation is completely over-stated IMO. I had various issues, and had two recalled.

Kia Sportage and Hyundai i35x are worth looking at too. Granted both are a few years old at this stage too but the Kia has a 7 year/150,000km warranty while the Hyundai has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. I think both come with 3 year's free servicing packages too.

Sportage is harder on diesel. Might check out the Hyundai though. The CX5 and the CMax are both very economical.
