Hi. I'm a self employed plumber looking to take on an apprentice. Could I take on a guy on the jobridge internship for 6 months, and if he's up to the challenge, take him on as an apprentice afterwards?

You want 6 months free labour from someone? That won't count towards their apprenticeship? That's nonsense, the industry norm is to take a new apprentice on for a trial period where they are paid the minimum wage, then when registered as an apprentice they get the normal 1st year rate

We'll id say the first 6 months they're costing me money. Apprentiships are very rare these days and whoever I pick I want to make sure they're good enough and deserve it. I worked for 2 years " trial period" before I was signed up for my Apprentiship

Did they pay you during those 2 years?

So what exactly is the point of the internship scheme exactly?

industry norm is you take on an apprentice and he serves his apprenticeship from day onr - trial period? that's what probation is for

i would say either take on an apprentice or dont
if they're costing you money then its down to a bad teacher

I wouldn't say it's bad teaching cause there's not much they can do for the first few months. I thought the internship scheme was aimed towards getting people back into work. I have no intention of abusing the scheme by taking on a guy for 6 months, purposely letting him go and taking on someone else and so on.

No you can't as it's not allowed for trades which are apprenticeship based, at least someone was thinking in FAS when the set it up!
Why can't you do like most companies do, take on a lad for a month or two, pay him minimum wage and then if he likes the trade start him on his apprenticeship and his wage drops to the the first year rate.

That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks for your help. Will do

I had the 3 month probation period before getting taken on full time registered with fas etc, but i was paid first year rate (6euro an hour) from day one not minimum wage. I believe this to be the norm.

You were had. If you're not registered as an apprentice, you're not an apprentice, and so the national minimum wage applies.

I realised I was lucky enough to get such a good opportunity that money didn't matter

Its the norm with all the big electrical contractors never even thought about it that way!
