    Is there any reason that your hosts file may have been edited?

    I've no idea if thats the case, I bought the mac in America last month and wouldn't have changed any settings. Any idea how I could check this? thanks

    Open terminal app.

    Run 'dig www.amazon.co.uk'

    Post what is in the "ANSWER SECTION"

    I for example have an answer of IP 54.239.36.155
    If you paste this into your browser you should load www.amazon.co.uk

    If the IP works but the name doesn't then you have a DNS problem.
    If the IP doesn't work then you have a network problem.

    I assume the IP from my earlier post worked?
    If so DNS is messed up.
    Check System Preferences -> Network -> WiFi or whatever your interface is -> Advanced -> DNS to see the server and search domain configuration.

    Other useful info out of dig,
    $ dig www.amazon.co.uk

    There are numerous reasons to not use your ISPs DNS servers one of which is 24x7 reliability. Google offers a DNS service which is fast and highly available. See https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/ for more

    Hi Dorsanty. Yes your IP worked perfectly. I'll look into the google DNS service you posted. Thanks for your help with this!

    Had a similar problem only this weekend with Safari only half loading pages, switched the DNS to google and it sorted it out straight away.
