Replacing Tyres - Continue with the Michelin Energy Savers?

    Hi there,

I've used Michelin Energy Savers for years, and have always been happy enough with them, especially with how long they last.

I'm now driving a '08 Prius and I have 4 195/55/R16 87 H Energy Savers on it. I need to replace a couple of the tyres though, and I thought I'd ask for some advice before I just go ahead and get more Energy Savers again.

Are there any other tyres that people would recommend instead of Energy Savers? For a price comparison, I can get the Energy Savers on Eiretyres for €100 each.

    Thanks...

    J

The only other tyre I'd consider is Goodyear's Efficient Grip Performance.

Don't listen to any replies following proclaiming the greatness of Kumho, Vredestein, Falken, Nankang or any type of all season tyres.

Nothing better than a unbiased opinion

In any other walk of life if you get a free opinion from a well informed, experienced professional you would be grateful. Of course on Boards Motors it becomes a biased opinion :pac:

OP for what it's worth I totally agree with VeVeX, the only tyre comparable to the Michelin is the Efficient Grip Performance, any other tyre is a backward step from what you are used to.

    I like Yokohama.

As for Good Year tires, we call them "Good for a Year" tires.

Pretty ironic coming from a Yokohama fan :p

I got rid of them on the front of mine and replaced them with Hankook Kinergy ECOs,seem to get a few MPG more than I was getting with the Michelins, though I got 110% out of them so they probably lost some of their energy saving properties later in their life. The grip seems the same for normal driving, and the braking seems good on both tyres.

Had those Michelin's on my previous car and found them to be a very good tyre. I would go for them again tbh.

Have them on two cars (energy saver xm). Infinitely quieter and safer than accelera widow makers fitted to the car when I bought it. Quieter than Pirelli p6000 on the other car but grip not as aggressive.

What are the michelins like grip wise? Need to replace all four corners on my car in the next few weeks. Local tyre place quoted me 110 a corner fitted, tracked and balanced for the energy savers. Is this a bit expensive?

    Thanks for all the replies...

The Goodyears look good alright, but they seem to wear faster and are a bit more expensive too, so I reckon I'll stick with the Energy Savers.

That's a good price colm_mcm, but you're right, there seems to be lots of different types, and there are lots of different types on Eiretyres too. I've no idea what the difference is between them, or why they vary so much in price. Anyone else know?

€110 a corner seems like a decent price to me mickeyk, and I've never had any grip issues with them, and they last ages, which is what I like most about them...

Paid 115 each for 215/60/16 in limerick.
Which I would have been happy with if they were the V rated I asked for rather than the T rated they fitted.
Still the best tyre I could get in limerick in that size.

Yeah I found them to be very quiet and the car drove nicer with them too tbh.

+1 for the Efficent Grip Performance. What you'll lose on the wear (and they don't seemto be that bad) you'll gain on fuel bills. Lowest rolling resistance in AutoExpress test and came second overall. Good quiet tyre and fantastic wet grip too.

I have them on the family car with Dunlop Sport BluResponse on my own car. The Dunlops top the AE test and I think are the same compound. Just had them fitted this week - 205/55 16 were €95 a corner fitted from Discount Tyres in Ballycoolin.

I have one 195/55/16 I took off my prius when I went to 205s.

It is near new if you want it.

My Dunlop seem to be lastin fine and no issues with grip. Unlike the minerva that were on it. They were dangerous.

Would I right in saying the performances of these tyres would change as you go up sizes?

I'm not sure they would change that much. It's the same rubber and thread pattern. A lower profile would improve feel and reduce comfort, same as any other tyre.

Just wanted to say that I ended up going with the Energy Savers again, and got two of them on Oponeo.

    Thanks for the advice...
