Hi all, this is probably a very basic question but all in how much would it be to get Saorview into a newish house.Have Sky at mo,basic package with HD so its around 50 euro a month and live in a bad area for internet so annoyingly have to have Eircom landline to get Sky...we don't use landline phone much at all and its over 50 euro a month of bill:(...kinda wasted money.
To get Saorview do you need good internet connectivity in your area or does that matter at all?

    Thanks for any replies.

You need the correct type of aerial and a saorview approved aerial and then its free. You can get a satelite box to get the itvs, bbcs etc etc free too.

Saorview is FREE - it is in the name.

If you have a Sky dish, that same dish will get you all the UK TV channels through Freesat for FREE - it is in the name.

You need a TV that can receive Saorview (most recent ones do - say last few years) or you can get a add-on set top box that will allow you to receive it, but definitely you will need some class of aerial pointing at your local transmitter. You might get away with an internal aerial or one in the loft, but one at eave level is generally recommended - but try it first. Check out saorview.ie for more info.

Replace your Sky box with a Freesat or FTA receiver, and no more bills.

Cost - less that €200 to whatever you want to pay. You can do it all yourself or pay someone to do it for you.

I've never seen a specific recommendation for an 'eave level' aerial. That would mean having it sticking out the front of your house if it faces the transmitter, & leaves it below the roofline of any similar houses nearby. Fine if it works but not 'generally recommended'.

Nothing to to with the internet, it's terrestrial broadcast.

Saorview is free, but has only Irish channels.
Sky costs money, but has more channels.
If you are going to get a satellite dish, then you can also get Freesat to get UK channels and combine this with Saorview. This is also free, but the combination might be slightly less convenient to record etc than Sky.

Roof top - eave level - whatever works. Generally, it is not a big installation and each site differs but as high as you need to go and for most, eaves would be high enough.

Sorry I may not have phrased ? that well.....I meant by to get in Saorview...how much is it typically with cost of aerial included?....as regards stopping getting Sky...have never done that....will they not look to get their Sky dish back when you discontinue with them....or do they not bother looking for them back?
Biggest saving I would see out of it would be been able to drop having landline phone we don't get enough use out of.Oldest TV in house would be about 5 years old.

    You own the Sky gear.

If your TV is able to receive Saorview and it works on an indoor aerial, cost would be €2 or so, perhaps even free. An Aerial costs about €20 or so, and some coax.

So anything from €2 to €200 or more, if you pay someone to help.
