I think they're missing a trick here. If the fee was around €200, I'm sure a lot of people would pay the extra for a number that suited their shiny new car. I'd imagine that there are a very small number of people who would pay €1000 for the privilege.

Meh, they get enough out of a car over its life. This is just more admin work

If they allowed cars to be re-registered to a buyer's home county when ownership transfers for say €250 they'd do well. Like it or not, certain cars look better with a D-reg :)

Exactly, you see very few obvious reserved plates nowadays. They don't even seem to be able to shift 520 to BMW buyers anymore.

I agree. They made a mess of it when they raised the price to €1000!
I've even seen '911' plates on average cars since the price went up.

Allowing transfer to your home county reg plate would be a great idea too.

I'd be willing to bet they are getting far less revenue in now than before they increased the price. Some large fleet buyers used to reserve blocks to match or partially match reg plates to fleet numbers, few if any do so now.

Nothing new in this, as usual the Irish way is the opposite of good practice and bad value for consumers, never mind though SIMI got to have their say on it so all is good.

The current reg plate format is just pathetic, up to 5 characters wasted identifying year and county followed by up to 6 additional numbers.

Just look at how much money DVLA generate selling off vanity plates across the water because they have correctly reasoned that allowing plates different to the standard format is no big deal when it can be used to create a marketable product. Everyone wins, government get extra revenue, punters can choose from thousands of available plates and transfer them from car to car. And most importantly onlookers can identify tw*ts by a quick glance at their reg plates.

    €1000. Thank John Gormley.

at the time, if you addressed a letter to Cnut, Dublin, it would land straight on his desk...

With all of the difficulties in implementing new taxes, you'd think that the powers that be would jump at the chance of a charge that loads of people would voluntarily pay?

That goes against the very principle of the way things are done in Ireland. Any new tax has to hit everyone, regardless of wealth or absence of such and no matter if they can afford it. It can in no way be linked to income or ability to pay it and above all, it has to hit the people who can't afford it harder than anyone else. Otherwise there wouldn't even be a point in having an Irish state. Our national motto should be "Screw the Bastard!"

But you are forgetting that if people could hide the age of their cars by using personalised plates then they wouldn't be pressurised into replacing it by the shame of their neighbours knowing they have an old car.

SIMI wouldn't like that, after they have just had success in lobbying for the 1/2 yearly plates to be brought in so cars are now old a whole 6 months earlier. No what we need is for as many people as possible to replace their old cars as quickly as possible with shiny new base models complete with the tiniest engine possible to get them up a hill.

Are you saying that you think the SIMI hope the new plate system will encourage people to buy new cars every 6 months?

I'm sure they wouldn't mind. And they would run scrappage schemes to get all those 4 month old death traps off the road.

Eh? not sure if that was meant to be a facetious comment but it would certainly seem like one to me. When you say certain cars what specific cars do you mean? Perhaps the same could be said of a Cork reg car thats predominately used in Cork or a Galway reg car thats predominately used in Galway.

Would I pay €250 for that privilege?...No not even if I was a millionaire 10 times over and thats not a tongue in cheek sort comment. The way it is I pay too much of my hard earned to this obviously corrupt Guberment already..
