Hi, I want to go birdwatching this weekend and the only BWI outing is to Emo court, on Sunday morning.

I didn't even register the place but it looks nice.

Has anyone done any birdwatching there? Is it recommended? What species are likely to be found? I live 1h away so want to make sure the trip is worth it.

I checked online but couldn't find much about it.

    Thanks

I like Emo Court a lot but have only ever been there with family so haven't really had the opportunity to explore on my own. There is a large lake and woodland type walks with quite a variety of bird life. I live further away than you but I certainly would be tempted to go if I was whithin half an hour or so from it.

If you do go ,would be interested in your impressions..

Hi, Emo is great. There are deer, hare and plenty of red squirrels.
I have been up there for the last two weekends photgraphing the squirrels.
There are plenty of little songbirds the Jays are a regular sight as are the sparrowhawks.
I have not really concentrated on the bird life, there is plenty to see so it would be a good day.
You can get into the grounds from first light.
However the car park is small and gets full quickly so I would go early.
The OPW fellow who lives on site was telling me that visitors numbers have quadrupled this year. For me it make getting good shots of the squirrels near impossible after 10.30am. He also mentioned the extra footfall was having an effect on the wildlife. I would not be sure I agree with him as the reds seem to be thriving.
The little restaurant does an okay breakfast and there are toilet facilities in the car park.

Don't they allow car parking on the grass next the hard standing? Or maybe only in summer when the ground is dry.
I think the cafe is good, we have had lunch there on a number of occasions , we stopped for lunch there in Sept on our way somewhere else..smashing meal al fresco!

Thanks, very tempted now. The event starts at 9am so early enough for a Sunday.

I think I will make an last minute decision. Those BirdWatch Ireland outings are always very enjoyable.
