Most of the american, UK news agencies and few big global companies web sites are down at the moment because of global hack of Syrian Electronic Army (SEA).
I would suggest to stay away from those pages (CNBC, Dell, Telegraph, Independent etc) by the moment. As you never know ...

Did a quick look, and it sounds like they didn't hack any of those servers. What they actually did is capture some of the traffic that was meant for those servers, probably by changing DNS entries on a single server somewhere. I've no idea of the scale, but it certainly isn't global, and it could be as small as a single ISP, the type of thing that could be done by a single untrustworthy employee. Nothing but PR hype as far as I'm concerned.

Perhaps a better title for this thread might be 'temporary, minor inconvenience caused by Syrian Electronic Army?'

They might have hacked the globe but I'm off the grid man there's no way they'll get to me.

    Support Bashar al-Assad until death.

    I'm untouchable.

The Flat Earth Society has issued a strenuous denial of this assertion.

DNS hijacks in at least one case. They tend to go for the easier and non-technical approach of going for the human element by social engineering/deceiving people into doing something, such as repointing DNS records.

I have the admire the genius in it though. Syrians using cyber warfare to attack their enemies. It's a smart tactic, and gives them a slight advantage. Although I don't know what they're trying to achieve by hacking new sites and shutting them down.
