So I read this a few minutes ago:

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/courts/aer-lingus-sued-for-1m-by-woman-distressed-at-loss-of-priceless-ring-30778321.html

I'll start off by saying that the woman gives the impression of a drama queen and money hungry.
    Now my questions:

    1) Why would you keep an engagement ring in your suitcase?
    2) If the ring is so priceless where did you get the 1 million Dollars figure from?
    3) She mentions that the SD card of her camera had all her childrens' lives on it. Why would you have all these photos with no back up saved?
    4) How much sh1t for brains does she have?

I think AL have been somewhat fair to her, offering her the max compensation under international law.
Whether this is her attempt at just coning an airline remains to be seen but I find it hard to imagine that she will win anything at all.
The sueing culture in the States boggles the mind to be honest.

You are right about the litigious culture, the €1million is for loss, distress etc and would be typical of such suits.

But if you read the article, the case was taken from her at the gate, due to it being judged too heavy for carry-on at the last moment. I think a lot of people have had that flustering experience of having to pull gear out of bags to balance weight or lose a bag to the hold if a flight is full, its not very pleasant.

A million is ridiculous but the airline/handler/airport should probably have to bear some responsibility.

Not the 1st time they've been sued, won't be the last, this is a non story (Irish Indo FFS)

I see where you are coming from but I just can't understand why you'd put an 8k engagement ring into your luggage.
Surely if it is worth so much then you'd have it on your hand so you can keep an eye on it at the very least?

    Still her fault though

it says before you board...over 10k goes in hold and is not for in flight. However....why in the world would you put a ring in that hand or hold luggage..i mean it weighs at most 50grams or whatever...its ridculous.

Absolutely her fault. Figure is ridiculous, expect the case will be thrown out, if not I hope costs are awarded against her.

I'm hoping that when AL wins which I think they will, they should refuse also the max compensation.

hopefully they find her stuff and when it turns out the SD card has **** all on it AL sue her for a million.

I think a lot of people should ensure that their bags aren't over the weight limit. It's not as if they don't tell you when you buy your ticket.

The ring is probably at home anyway...

Well, they have. They've offered her €1,344 in compensation. This figure has probably been calculated as the average maximum cost of replacing luggage and dealing with the hassle of replacing luggage.

No carrier can be reasonably expected to compensate for exceptionally costly items such as an engagement ring which have not been notified to them in advance, nor be expected to compensate for non-tangible losses like sentimental photographs.

Chances are the judge will throw it out on the basis of the T's & C's she agreed to when she booked the tickets.

Article says the bag was approved as a carry-on at the check-in desk - so she had a reasonable expectation that it would be allowed as a carry-on. The claim is still madness though...

That reminds me, the last time I flew with Aer Lingus I had an engagement ring but now I don't.

No need for me to prove it, just give me money.

I lost a jockstrap of sentimental value on a Ryanair flight once.

Michael O'Leary personally wore a new jockstrap until it had acquired that ballsy odour that I missed so much and then sent it on to me.

They really are a much friendlier airline these days.

I dunno, if you are going to make up a number, make it a big number.

1 million won't go far between brooklyn and amsterdam these days. I'd be telling her to go for 5m. Since we're in the realms of the ridiculous.

How does she even prove she had a ring in there in the first place?

A two-carat diamond ring only worth €7,400 as well seems a bit on the
    cheap side.

It's not the only case she's going to lose :pac:

Ok, I'll get my coat :o

She mustn't think much of the engagement ring if she doesn't wear it ( most women wont take theirs off )
Or maybe she took it off cause she was expecting a bit of action in Amsterdam

Every bit of it was her fault. They clearly tell you weight /size restrictions. She ignored it. If I was told to put a bag in the hold the first thing I'd do is unzip it at check in and take out what was priceless to carry on my person on board.

And surely she has heard of backing up her data?? Not an airlines fault she is an idiot there. We have baby photos saved to about 3 hard drives and dropbox too, just in case. Like normal people do with 'priceless' data.

I think a lot of people have had that flustering experience of having to pull gear out of bags to balance weight or lose a bag to the hold if a flight is full, its not very pleasant.

Simple solution, read what you are allowed to bring on and pack accordingly. You can buy a luggage scales for about €10 and a measuring tape for €5. I travel frequently, mostly with work and 2 - 3 day stays and I have never had an issue with carry on luggage.

This woman is taking the piss and I wouldn't be surprised if the ring miraculously reappeared in a few months.
