    Hey all,

I am soon to be admitted on the Roll and I am continuing with my training solicitor. I am about to enter negotiations but I've been asked to pitch first! I am on the Law Society minimum and have been for the last three years.

I am working in a small town in Leinster practice. We are a growing firm and quite profitable. What would be the going rate?

    Thanks.

Use the search function and you should find several lengthy discussions on the subject. My guess would be any where from €20,000 to €40,000.

Personally though I think your bosses are looking for a bit more thought than a number and one that you got off boards.ie.

Look at the Brightwater recruitment salary survey for the last few years. Mysalary.ie also has good general info. But when reviewing the info, be aware that NQ salaries vary wildly from firm to firm - from 20-25k at the smaller firms to ~60k at the top commercial firms. Also, don't undersell yourself - better to start a bit high (within reason) and reduce during negotiations than undersell yourself!

The main thing is look at the value you bring - if you can, work out how much fees you have brought into a firm as a trainee, and how much your likely to bring in as an NQ based on what your firm will bill you out at. Having the figures to justify what you ask for will help you get the best offer.

Is 20,000.00 for a newly qualified really possible?Seems extremely low for any firm no matter how small.

10% above minimum wage, with fully quals on Jobs bridge I'd say it's more than possible.

Fair enough I suppose. I have been going by Brightwater Salary and using the €25,000.00 figure as the lowest point (average I know).

I'm in the exact same situation as OP in a small firm, but I would feel used if I was offered less than €25,000.00.

While I've no experience of solicitors pay scales, I've found the Brightwater survey to over estimate pay, generally. Now to be fair do I expect most solicitors to be on more, absolutely, but the OP did say they were in a small town.

Of course I defer to you as someone with actual experience, my main point though was I expect the OP's firm are looking for some justification of the figure, hence why they've let the OP go first and pitch.

I'm actually agreeing with you that it is possible, but it would be abuse of a position to offer so little no matter how many solicitors are on Jobbridge.

I have to have the same discussion a OP with my boss. So I don't yet know what I will be offered.

If unsure, I think OP should aim for 30,000.00 which is my intention given the current market where Firms are starting to do quite well again.

If I was being allowed to pitch I'd be a bit more imaginative but I suspect I'd get a not-so-PFO :pac:

How about minimum wage and a % of fee?

Ask for equity! 20%, strong-arm them! :pac:
