A SERVING member of the Defence Forces has been questioned by gardai after they discovered ammunition, stun grenades and drugs during a search of his home.

The army private, aged in his 20s, was arrested after members of the Southern Divisional Task Force, who were acting on intelligence, raided the house in west Dublin on Tuesday night.

Officers found a small quantity of ammunition as well as flash and stun grenades which are used during military training exercises.

Gardai also seized quantities of Viagra, ecstasy and amphetamine during the search, which they suspect were for sale and supply.

The house was sealed off for a period when the Army Bomb Squad was called in shortly after 11pm to examine the munitions. It ensured that the munitions were then safe to be removed.

The soldier was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and taken to Tallaght Garda Station where he was questioned last night.

Gardai carried out a follow-up search of lockers at the army private's barracks. However it is understood that nothing else was found.

The suspect's superior officers were also interviewed to establish that the munitions were Army property.

The Irish Independent understands that the private was released from garda custody at 8pm last night and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Could he get charged by the Military police with taking Military property as well as by the Gardaí for drugs offences?

Wasn't that "grenade" found a flashbang?

Can still do a bit of harm. I remember reading the fires in the Iranian embassy siege were caused by flash bangs.

Hold on a sec, was it ACTUAL stun grenades (aka flash-bangs) he was caught with? Or what we would refer to in the DF as 'thunder-flashes'??

I think some posters here, and possibly the journalist that wrote the piece are confusing the two.

A stun grenade (or flash-bang to its close friends) is a type of grenade, complete with pin, fuse, fly off lever etc. that is used as a non lethal means of incapacitating people, usually in a room. On detonation it emits a very very bright 'flash' and very very loud 'bang' momentarily blinding, deafening and temporarily disorienting anyone near by. The effects are greatly magnified in an enclosed space and in the dark.

Stun grenades are available in a wide variety of shapes and colorings but most that I have seen are of similar proportions to the smoke grenades used in the Irish DF only slightly narrower.

Thunder flashes, often confused wth the above mentioned stun grenades are a pyrotechnic, often used in the Irish DF to simulate grenade detonation, as on detonation the emit a loud bang. The most common ones in use with the DF traditionally have been white hollow tubes, with brown stencilling (indicating low explosive), with the explosive itself sealed in a plastic cap at one end, which is ignited by stoking it like a match against the unscrewed cap. Many soldiers, often and mistakenly refer to these as Stun Grenades or Flash-Bangs.

Well not really 'end of'. Would love to know if it was actual stun grenades or thunder-flashes he had. There is only a few very small and very select groups within the DF that would have access to actual stun grenades.
