Mountain bike, cross bike or hybrid?

I want a winter bike, it'll be for spinning around footpaths on the outskirts of town and around the forest trails. It's mostly hard packed gravel covered in leaves, grass and there'll be a little mud but not much. My spins will be anywhere from 5k - 15k, mainly closer to 5.

I'm looking for something fairly light that I can load into the boot of the car. I have a dodgy ankle so a lighter bike should see less pressure on it. My budget is around €400. I have a Trek 1.2 for summer cycling so don't want to spend a fortune on what will be a low mileage second bike.

Is a hybrid suited if I have bigger tyres on it, should I stick to a mountain bike or is a cross bike an option?

Cheers, I'll have to pop into the local bike shop and have a good look at them.
