Exporting a car to the north

I am planning to move home to the north and I want to bring my car with me. It was originally a Northern reg but I re-registered to a southern reg a number of years ago when I moved down here.

If I move home I want to re-register it as a northern reg car again.

Has anyone here gone through the process of "exporting" their car to the north? The process seems a little less straight forward that it was when I brought the car down here.

    Thanks.

Its not difficult. Your car will pick up its old UK reg number. You may have to register it again however you may be able to apply for a new V5C if the car was in your name before you exported it.

Also you may be entitled to a VRT refund if you paid any when you registered it here.

I was looking at the UK website for this and it seems I also have to provide a certificate of conformity, which basically says the car is suitable for the UK market.

Yeah I paid a good chunk of VRT, didn't know that I might be entitled to a bit of a refund. Will look into that.

You don't need certificate of conformity if car was already registered in UK.

In relation to VRT refund, you can check here how much refund can you possibly be entitled to.
If you decide to claim it, you need to set an appointment for VRT export examination. You can book an appointment here and I think it costs 32 euro.
Then you have one month to remove car out of Ireland, and once you have it registered in the north, you send a copy of V5C to Irish revenue to confirm the fact that you registered it, and they can issue VRT refund.

Good to know about the certificate.

I checked and it turns out I'm not entitled to a VRT refund. Funny how I'm easily entitled to pay it!

From what I can see, the process is straight forward, although they told me I can't drive the car until the registration is complete which usually takes about 10 working days which is a massive inconvenience as I'd most likely need the car immediately.
