I know the Zondas offer a great performance:value ratio.
I can get Zondas in my LBS for €360 (I know i can get them cheaper online but want to keep the business local).
If i was to up my spend limit to €500, would I get significantly better wheels.
The wheels are intended as training wheels only.
I'll be using them for the Tour of Flanders Sportive this year (2015).

I got a set myself Spins. In all reality, if you up your budget to 500 for a set of low profile aluminium rims you will probably get a WORSE set of wheels. Its very hard to match the Zonda's in that price range, even more difficult to surpass them.

Although.... for Flanders the cobbles are not too bad I hear, nonetheless I would be tempted to consider handbuilt 36 spokes just in case. Open 4's on campag or shimano hubs for example.

I have a set of Zondas. Great wheels, great value, and tough. I have mine about a year. I've done about 9,000Kms on them. I haven't had to touch them them, and I'm no lightweight. I now have them on my "winter bike".

Sounds like a great deal Spins, what's the shop that's doing them for that price?

I got mine in Swimcyclerun. I don't think they have them in stock now.
However, this shop has them. I have dealt with them in the past, great to deal with. Postage is about 12.00 Euro, if I remember correctly.

O.P. I hope your LBS appreciates your loyalty.

    I've just checked:
swimcyclerun have them at 340 yo-yos.

I'm strongly considering a pair of Zondas myself.

They're €327 on Wiggle. It might be worth mentioning that to your LBS. Maybe they'll meet you half way in appreciation of your loyalty.

Op spend the 500 or so, on a set of Zondas and also a set of 36 spoke 105 hub winter wheels of bike discount or rose.

Shame to put new zondas to heavy use in the muck.

150 will get you a well built wheelset on rose.

OT, but are Irish roads necessarily worse on wheels in the winter? I know it's colder (A+ for me) and there tends to be more muck and debris about but unless you are riding cross country then what is the difference?

I would assume that potholes are more prevalent in winter due to the frost/ice causing the road to break up but it's not as if they repair them too quickly so that by April they are all gone

Guess this goes for the winter bike as a whole idea. Does it really make any difference or is it just that it feels nicer to have that super quick machine on the sunny days and it makes the slog of winter feel more productive as we are on the ''lessor' equipment?

Zondas are great wheels and will be fine for Flanders. Get some 25mm tyres (or bigger if your frame can take them) and double wrap your handlebars or get gel inserts.

And a good pair of gloves.

I might pick your brains on this further. I have your number somewhere. Are you suggesting I'd be better off getting handbuilt altogether or aswell as the Zondas?

Special deal with LBS as I buy most things from them. PM me for further info if you want.

Are you saying I can get a pair of handbuilt wheels for c. €140?

Everyone else, thanks for pointing out the bargains, most of which I've already used to get the price down to €360 from the shelf price of €460!!!

Finally, I have a pair of Aksiums that I use during the winter, should I use them in Flanders rather than the Zondas or handbuilt wheels as suggested?
