Class 1 Medical

    Does anyone know if there's somewhere to run through a class 1 medical without it being recorded. I have one or two things that I think may be a problem and I would like to discuss them without them being recorded.

    I would love to get a class 1 medical to go flying, even if it was just to trail signs around!

    I would suggest you contact one of the Authorised Medical Examiners appointed by the IAA and ask to examine the issues you think might be the problem. There's a list on the website. While they don't do a full class 1 they will probably be aware of what's required. Just tell them the truth. You want to be sure you won't fail a class 1 medical. You could even get yourself a class 2 medical while you're at it.

    As for getting a job 'trailing signs' or towing banners. Believe me that's the hardest job to get. They're quite picky about who gets to do that job.

    Also a bit of advice for pilots who already have medicals. Don't use an AME as your GP. They will report issues to the IAA even if they prove to be a non event. Caused extra hassle when it came to renewing a medical. I'm NOT saying don't report medical problems or hide them. It's more to avoid having to jump through some extra hoops on the day. Found out the hard way.:(

    The list of medical requirements is on the IAA website. While admittedly it is largely medical gobbledy gook, you may be able to at least pin down the area/s where you may run into difficulty. When it comes to doing your class 1, the examiner will often need to refer you on if there is a particular issue. The IAA have a list of a approved specialists who can sign you off in these circumstances. If it looks like your issue is one that may need a specialist opinion, you could just go direct to the specialist and see if you would pass. If you do, I would assume the report would be sufficient for the IAA provided your actual class 1 exam happened reasonably soon after (so no double whammy on the payment front).

    Hopefully someone can give me some advice on this. I have a Class 1 JAA medical that I got in gatwick almost four years ago. However since then I have not done any flying and my medical is lapsed or is nearly lapsed I have not checked. I chose not to do my medical here upon advice from the IAA who said that a medical condition would prevent me from getting a class 1 here. This was not a problem in the UK where I was able to get one.

    I am now in a position where I can afford to do some flying and I would like to renew my medical. I am not really familiar with the ins and outs of the process so I'm hoping someone can help. What options do I have regarding the renewal? Will I have to do it in the UK again?

    Any help appreciated.

    What type of flying do you wish to do? Would it be just on a weekly basis type of thing or would you be going for the CPL?

    Class 1 medicals need to be re-validated every year.

    I was aware of the class 1 being renewed on a yearly basis but I have since decided that private flying is for me an its is private flying that I would like to do.

    However saying that I would like to keep my options open should I decide to take it further in the future.

    You could get a Class 2, it isn't as thorough and is valid for 5 years. You're limited to private flying only with it though, but you can get a Class 1 in the future if you decide to go further than PPL. Call or email the IAA to see if your condition would affect you getting a Class 2 done here.

    Actually I think you can for renewals. It just has to be EASA compliant. I can't be sure but I seem to remember there is an arrangement. Of course there's always 'oop north'. Some of the AMEs there can even renew a CAA class 1.

    But as you say you have an issue that would preclude a class 1 issue here. That might be a problem if you try to renew the class 1 in one of the Irish aeromedical centres.

    You are dead right ! You can renew your EASA Class 1 Medical in any EASA member state, however whatever state that retains your medical records (i.e. where you did your initial) must receive a full copy of all the Medical Examination forms, test results and certificate, from each renewal ! Some states will send this paperwork automatically, but it varies and it is your responsibility to ensure that the information in received by the state where your medical records are held !

    So what yer saying is I could renew it here and just make sure that my results and such are passed to to relevant authorities? Will it still be a UK medical or will it become an Irish medical cert?

    I would like to start a PPL put with a UK cert does that mean I must do my PPL in the UK or can I use that medical cert to do it here? I remember this was not possible when I first got my medical and is one of the reasons I did not do any flying in Ireland.

    What kind of hearing standards are you expected to have? Personally, I sometimes feel my hearing isn't as good as it used to be due to nights out in college, concerts and listening to music at home too loud. I sometimes find it hard to follow conversations in a noisy room and I ask people to repeat themselves sometimes.

    That said, I get by easily and its not a major problem in daily life. A lot of people my age probably experience something similar, I'm not the only concert-goer/clubber out there!

    But would a small problem like this be enough for me to fail the medical?

    That's the requirements for Class 1. Go to a hearing specialist and see if you meet the requirements.. Cheaper than a complete class 1. But I'm sure you'll be fine.. Everyone has been a clubbed at some stage 😂
