Take the asbestos off carefully, without breaking it if you can. Do NOT use power tools to cut it (not that anyone would need to, but anyway...) Store it some where out of the way, wrapped in builders plastic.

Mod Note: This should be carried out by a competent person/specialist in asbestos removal.

Asbestos is a hazardous material which requires risk accessment, safe controlled removal, packaging, transport & disposal, in order to comply with Asbestos Health, Safety & Environmental Regulations.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has legal powers under the European Communities (Protection of Workers) (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations, 1989 (as amended) to ensure the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work. The Authority is responsible for policing anyone engaged in work with asbestos, including professional asbestos removal, and surveying firms so as to ensure that the worker protection legislation is implemented.

Mod Note: The removal of asbestos should be carried out by a competent person/specialist in asbestos removal...or at minimum under the guidance of a competent person/specialist. I/we cannot allow discussion on DIY approaches to asbestos removal.

    More guidance here....http://www.hsa.ie/eng/Your_Industry/Chemicals/Asbestos/

The law (with which you must comply) and the reality (what can kill you) are two different things. I encourage you to research both in regards to handling the various different forms of asbestos, in particular how this is approached in other countries.
