In whats dubbed the Tesco Value of Monet paintings (cheap greedy Ireland the only things we pay a lot for is quangos)
A man has gone on trial charged with damaging three paintings in two separate incidents in Dublin.

Andrew Shannon, 50, with an address at Willians Way, Ongar in Dublin 15 has pleaded not guilty to criminally damaging a Monet painting at the National Gallery in June 2012.

He has also pleaded not guilty to criminally damaging two paintings in the Shelbourne Hotel in January this year.

The prosecution says he damaged the paintings in the Shelbourne while on bail for the earlier incident in the National Gallery.

The jury, of seven women and five men, was told these were very unusual events.

Prosecuting lawyers said crimes in which paintings on public display, were damaged deliberately, not for money but in acts of almost mindless vandalism were extremely rare.

Mr Shannon is accused of putting his hand or fist through a Monet painting called 'Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sail Boat' at the National Gallery on 29 June 2012.

Haven't you heard? Vandalism is ok now, so long as you find the target distasteful.

See the Carauntoohill thread for details.

Of course, since I assume the paintings don't depict Christian scenes, no one here will be celebrating their destruction.

Not me, haven't been inside a church since I was 14.

Doesn't mean I'm blind to safe, populist bigotry.

This was probably the government's fault.

You don't have to know about art to get it.

Its like an eee PC to a Macbook/Alienware

A Walker TV to Sony Bravia/Samsung OLED

    An iPhone/s5/note4 to a Nokia 105

The painting he destroyed was one of the least sought after Monet paintings. Only worth around €9 million.

Just claim on the insurance and put the money into the health service.

Your dead right. The banks got us for 75 billion and we got nothing out of the deal but a few crappy hotels. I say we double down on that and buy the louvre off the frenchies.

I'm afraid that because this case is before the courts, we're not able to discuss it until it's completed.
