Where are there no locked down Ethernet ports?

    Hi all,

Does anyone know somewhere on campus that has Ethernet ports that are not locked down to Mac addresses? I need to install a wireless driver on my laptop without any USB sticks. Just with an Ethernet cable.

Are the ones in the reading room locked down? IT building? Engineering labs possibly where there are space for laptops?

    Thanks

As far as I know they've all either been decommissioned or are for staff use only. That way only people with valid student credentials can access the network, and all activity can be traced back to any given student.

No chance they're going to allow a random anonymous machine to connect to the network.

    You can validate ethernet connections.
I think the problem is to do with the fact that no-one uses them anymore. You might just be the only one in NUI who actually has need of one.
I think you'll have to buy a USB and go down that road. Although if your quite skilled, you can unplug a computer and connect through the ethernet there, but I'm not sure how they're DHCP is configured, maybe it won't even let you connect, as it won't give you an IP.

I ended up having to crawl the internet for the driver and put it on a USB stick.

I'd have to spool my LAN MAC Address or I would have to register my LAN MAC Address with ISS before I could use the ethernet ports. Frankly, I couldn't be bothered.

The WiFi can be pretty slow at peak times and I have found the PCs to be much faster. That would be the only reason. Eduroam seems to be slower than NUIGWiFi too.

Depends on where you're situated. I'm in the IT building and eduroam's been fairly stable and fast for me at the moment.

I was in the library. Found over the last month it's not the best, especially when using it on the top floor of the Engineering building. Eduroam in the IT is ok. Eduroam can be funny sometimes and it's not my laptop as I use a WPA2-Enterprise network elsewhere regularly with no problems.
