Good to have the bikeshare open in Galway. It's not without its problems. Good article here:

Problems include the removal of bike parking in a key location for commuters, leading a mess of bikes locked to every pole and post in the area.

We estimate that they removed in the region of 50 or more bike parking spaces to replace them with Bikeshare stations.

They dropped at least one of proposed Bikeshare stations because of protests over loss if car parking.

Some pix from yesterday's launch in Galway.

Apart from the Minister, there were several FG public representatives (TDs/Councillors) present, along with the Mayor, senior Council officials and reps from the National Transport Authority.

Also substantial media and Garda presence!

Nobody at all from the Labour Party, funnily enough. It was a Labour Councillor who made the biggest fuss about the loss of a few car parking spaces. Curious, since he's a cyclist himself, or was...

I am having trouble reconciling official indifference/incompetence in the area of cycling provision generally (eg the dire bike parking situation) with their undoubted enthusiasm for the shared bike initiative.
