    Guys and gals,

I got my wife converted from iphone to android machine and she got a Sony Experia z3 compact.

However the device is giving serious problems, it tells us she has total space of 11.5GB. that 11.4GB is used.

The usage graphic on her phone shows approx. 75% space available, yetwhen i connect the phone to my laptop it shows the drive as 100% full.

No iphone data was brought across, her contacts were packed in a vCard and mailed to herself to be opened on the new phone.

I did a windows search of the phone for files >128MB... None were found.

Any one come across something similar or know how to resolve it?

    Guys,

seems this isnt a phone issue afterall, the phone was replaced, worked ok for a week or so and now the same thing is happening.

Phone says its 95% full yet there is roughly 60-65% of storage unused.

Anyon come acrosd this on any android device?

Can a mod change the title to "URGENT - memory issue on android phone"? More people might read if it isnt phone specific.

    Thanks

Do you have any big video files in the phone?

Do you have any cloud store app syncing data in your phone?

Try using Clean Master app to see if it helps.

Post screenshot of storage information on phone.

Have you added a near full sd card that you might be confusing the internal storage with?

Some duplication in the screenshots but you get the idea.

The 724mb free space is strange alright, I wonder if its just a software bug and should say 7.24gb

Have you checked for any updates? Or tried moving a file/files larger than 724mb into the storage and see what happens

I've hooked up to the labtop and searched for files larger than 128mb ... non found.

Is it still possible to move files onto the phone even though the storage is reported to be full/near full? It is most likely a software bug that is just reporting the wrong information so check for any system updates from sony.

It may also be caused by some interference from an app that was installed. If you still can't solve it I'd recommend doing a factory reset on the phone, and pay attention as to when the storage issue happens again to try find the cause.

No, she isnt able to donw load apps or use apps when the 'memory' reached 95% capacity

Would it be worth un-installing apps one at a time, and re-installing if there is no great dropp after un-installing one?

Do what the lads say and plug it into a pc and try and copy over a movie file thats like 2gb odd, to see if it manages to copy or gives an error saying not enough space to copy.

This will help understand if its only an issue in Android or if its a bigger issue with the internal storage.

Also as the lads say have you installed all the latest updates?

The good news is that the problem seems easy to identify. Anyone in a phone store can quickly determine that there is something wrong with that Memory, and simple give you a replacement. There is at least 5GB mysteriously disappeared.

Its a corrupt memory space, or someone has accidentally flashed a second copy of the ROM alongside the first - not even sure that is possible. Perhaps someone accidentally installed a third party app store and that has reserved space for itself.

Did you run the phone in safe mode and check the memory then?

Run this app (might need to free up space first as you say) to see if it tells you anything..

Ok, cleared all her apps off the phone... 2GB free now.

Disk usage app is showing 8GB of her 11.5GB on her 16GB phone taken by something called 'system data'

    Any ideas what this is?

How do you run the phone in safe mode?

It's impossible to guess without knowing the exact details but the name suggests it would be related to the rom, but any data belonging to this is usually accounted for in the reserved storage (4.5gb difference between 11.5gb and 16gb)

My suggestion would be to run a cleaner app such as cleanmaster or 360 security. If this doesn't resolve it perform a factory reset after backing up any pictures/data you want to keep. You can do this in settings -> backup & reset. This would resolve any corrupt rom issues and hopefully it doesn't happen again. Also make sure to check for any sony updates in settings -> about phone -> software update.

That's definitely not normal. Here's mine on Sony Xperia sp, taking up 70x less space.

There's no more details to be seen like the rest of the storage so who knows what it is, whether there is files there or just reserved space. Either way, it needs to go. Try what I said above.

What's the icon in top left?

    :D

Could be reserved space for the update, once installed then it will disappear (maybe)

Well, did it work or still having the same issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,917 ✭✭✭✭GT_TDI_150

    No joy.

Did some googling till 02:00am last night and it seems to be an issue with a log file. All the narative online said to key in *#9900# and delete the file, but that option doesnt work on her phone (or mine)

Its gone back to 02 for repair ... Dont hold out much hope. If they cant fix it she'll just get another replacement :(

I wonder if the first replacement was the same phone but they just did a factory reset on which temporarily fixed it. This doesn't seem to be a common issue with the z3 compact as I cant find any info at all about it. Tell them you want a completely new phone.

Definitely the wisest course of action to return the phone under warranty.
Pre-2013 Android phones had a similar problem, but for completely different reasons, the memory/storage was divided differently in pre-2013 phones.
In 2014, this problem is unforgiveable from a flagship phone - I have no doubt that is related to a ROM update gone wrong. I would advise using PC companion to update next time just in case.

As Sony even outline on their website - your system partition should not be growing that big and certainly not accounting for over 7GB. Typically its not even 1GB, although Touchwiz on Sammy might be:D.
    2. System Memory (also known as “System partition” or “/system”) is used for the Android OS and for most applications that are pre-loaded from the factory. This type of memory is normally locked, and can only be changed through a firmware upgrade. There is usually some free space available in this section of memory. However, since it is locked, you cannot save apps, photos or any other content to this memory. System Memory is reserved for future firmware upgrades, which almost always need more memory than the original firmware. You cannot see or influence the use of this memory.

    Guys,

    a quick update...

The phone was sent back to O2 for repair.

the docket with the phone when it returned was that they upgraded the software on the phone.

I hd done this myself at home already so I suspect they did more than just that as so far ( 2 weeks of use later) the phone is behaving ok.

Only draw-back(or upside), missus has no faith in the phone (and no interest in setting it up for a third time) so I now have a new phone :p
