    Hi guys
Just got my first bike - a new Giant road bike - and have noticed that there is a constant ticking noise when in the big ring at the front, it also feels a little 'grindy', but when I am in the small ring there is no noise and it feels a lot smoother. Is this normal? Sorry for the silly question :o:o

    Thanks :)

no noise is normal. The only sound you should be hearing is the tyres on the Tarmac. It probably just need a little adjustment to the deraileurs.

It could be noisy from cross chaining. If you're on the big ring at the front and also on the bigger rear sprockets then the chain may well be rubbing the front derailleur. It can be adjusted but sometimes it's unavoidable and you'd probably be better off in a small/small gear to keep the chain straighter.

Thanks guys - might drop it into the shop for a look.
It is definitely not cross-chaining as I am paranoid about making sure I avoid this and also happens on most/all of the cogs at the back.

Thanks guys - didn't want to be bringing it back over nothing and looking like a fool!

It's not good, but not unusual if not correctly set up.

It may be that the chain is rubbing a poorly adjusted front derailleur. A new bike could need a bit of readjustment after riding for a few weeks.

If you bought the bike new are you going to get a free service after circa 6 weeks? If so bring it to the shop's attention.

    Enjoy the new bike. :)

Thanks smokey - they said to drop it in for a service in about 3 months as it will need to be tweaked. I might leave it until then so if it is not urgent.

    Thanks again :)

Have you a bike stand? Is the noise xoming from the front or rear. If rear you probably just need to index the gears. Front might just be a case of adjusting the upper limit screws.

YouTube has loads of videos Arts cyclery should have something on it.
