€3k to spend on a hatchback

Need some advice on a decent 1-1.2l hatchback for my other half. Currently in a 00 Clio that is not worth keeping any more due to increasing issues.

She does very low mileage, to and from the luas mainly, so I need a small hatchback, small engine, but easy to drive, reliable and cheap to maintain, not asking a lot is it?!!

Budget is about €3k. Looking around there seem to be 05 Astra's, some ford focus's, and the usual awful Chevrolet and Kia boxes. Any advice and tips from anyone that owns a decent small hatch would be good!

you should really check the link in my signature, plenty of biased advice in the advert :pac:

edit: genuine advice is that the likes of the astra/ focus are a category bigger than the clio you are getting rid of and are really only available in choices of 1.4 upwards.

a ford fiesta or toyota yaris would be good ways to spend 3k and replace the clio like for like.

As above, hard to bypass the yaris.

Only problem I see with the Yaris is any I've seen of the 00-04 vintage have looked like they've led a hard life of clutch riding and supermarket assault courses.

Stretch to €5k and the 07-08 jazz/Yaris/swift start coming into range. Better interiors, generally less abused looking.

The Clio might be an easy fix, so this could go on the back burner, if it's the crankshaft sensor I'll take it off and clean it, if it's the starter motor I'll scrap it!

You'd be better off with a mk1 yaris tbh. The mk2 isn't as good as it tbh, even on the inside it feels a lot cheaper.
