    Hi All,

I recently popped a spoke on my Mavick wheel. The spoke just popped out and im not sure how it happened. It caused the wheel frame to buckle and i couldnt cycle anymore as the wheel was stopped by the frame.

Anyway, the story is,i dropped the wheel into the shop to be fixed and the guy tells me the wheel cant be repaired as the spoke cant be fixed back to the wheel ie no hub.
Has anyone experince of this and of is so ,is it true?Id rather not fork out for a new wheel if i can get the present one fixed as the wheels arent cheap.

Wanted to make sure before I look down the route of buying a new one as ive heard some places arent to be trusted.

    thanks

If the spoke itself broke, then its usually possible to replace it.

However, if the spoke was ripped out of the rim, then the rim is a write-off since it is damaged beyond repair.

If replacement rims are available, then there is a possibility of rebuilding the wheel. However, in many cases, the cost of replacing the rim plus labour may exceed the cost of a new wheel.

Can you post a picture of the place that the spoke has popped out?

i have a couple spokes go on an easton wheel. had them replaced only for one to go again quickly enough. problem was a small crack in the rim where the spoke connected so the only option was to bin it sadly.

It would help to show us a picture of the damage caused and tell us how old the wheels are. Something similar happened to me during the summer.

It was on a Mavic ksyrium elite s. A small piece of the rear hub where the spoke attaches to it, broke off leaving one spoke hanging loose. I brought it back to the shop I bought them. Wheel was sent to france and came back about two months later, the same wheel built onto a new hub, covered by warranty.

I was told if it wasnt covered by warranty the wheel would have been a write off.

I had the part of the hub where the spoke enters shear off before. This was on a Mavic Aksium. Chainreaction replaced the wheel for me, no questions (it was less than a year old).

This happened a friend of mine and he was able to repair it by manufacturing a little insert. however, he had access to milling machines and he was quite handy.

'Popping out' as you put it, does not sound good. If it had snapped in the middle it'd likely be possible. But if it's broken off a piece at the hub (like the photo's above) then it's unlikely a shop can help you. Likewise if the spoke has pulled out of the rim then it's possibly damaged the threading in the rim and can't be fixed either. If your wheels are only a year or so old they should be covered by a manufacturers guarantee. On the plus side you can now upgrade your wheels without feeling too guilty.

That's not what is pictured. The spoke didn't "pop out". The part of the hub which the spoke attached to broke off.

Yes,the spoke broke off from the hub.Maybe popped out wasnt the correct term to use.

So just to be sure, did the 'spoke' break off or did the piece of the the wheel 'hub' break off, allowing the spoke to fall free?

Ill be as clear as i can.The spoke broke off the hub(centre of the bike wheel) and is still attached to the rim of the wheel.Ive had the wheel in 2 shops and both told me it cant be fixed.

Ive ordered Shimano R501 wheels for 100Euro so will just remove the Mavicks and use the shimano.Bit of a step down but i need cheap wheels fast.

I'd be interested in buying the rim off you if it's in decent nic and you're interested. I could pick up from anywhere in Dublin.
