Is it time to think about 'Ramp Metering' on the M50 at peak times?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramp_meter

Over the past few months the M50 SB has become like a car park in the Morning Rush Hour, the Mainline can backup from before J4, if Metering was introduced would this improve the mainline traffic flow & also how badly would it affect the likes of the N2, N3, N4 & N7 inbound?

There's ramp metering in place at the onslips at the DPT (from the R132 and from the overbridge) which, although only used once in a blue moon, works. Why they've never rolled it out further I don't know.

Its also badly needed on the N4 now as the bulk of delays on it are from terrible merging.

Yes, it seems to be the N4 NB Auxiliary lane that is always full in the evening because of the woeful requirement to cross lanes right at the M50/N4 merge, this must be the worst designed junction ever!

It's hardly as bad as the original N4E -> M50N which had no acceleration lane and a stop sign

Its amazing how there's no public transport between Tallaght and Blanch, considering the M50, between those junctions is one of the busiest roads in the state.

That's what Metro West was for. But that is years decades away from actually being built.

How many of the people on the M50 are actually going from Tallaght to Blanch?

I travel from Swords to Ballymount everyday & even with the current delays on the M50 every morning it is still an hour quicker then Public transport...

If we had a better Public transport system at least some of the congestion currently being experienced might be relieved.

Also as part of the upgrade I think they should have added a cycle track.

no cyclists allowed on motorways, NRA rulebook.

allot evidently since it is the busiest section of the state's busiest road, and it is tolled (which dampens demand) so obviously there is a massive demand for a bus route. Problem is, to maintain the monopoly held on the toll road there are no bridging points across the liffey nearby. I would propose a bus/cyclist/ped bridge accross the liffey, west of the existing toll bridge.

Beside the upgrade as a separate entity but using the same route, I hardly meant mark it on the side of lane 1...

It being busy doesn't suggest there's major traffic going from Blanch to Tallaght in and of itself, or anything of the sort.

Every journey from anywhere north of Blanch to Tallaght and further south and vice-versa is there too.

There needs to be public transport on that route but its not going to have a noticeable impact on the M50.

The thing about public transport is, it's never door to door but people use it none the less. If there were 3 comprehensive north-south bus routes running between Blanchand Tallaght, serving the majority of the housing estates and office parks via a new bridge on or beside the grounds of castleknock golf course, yes I would expect the reduction in M50 traffic to be significant. Of course orbital routes will depend on integrated ticketing, a higher proportion of passengers will be changing buses compared to radial routes.

At the risk of wandering off topic here, the NTA are against integrated ticketing for dublin bus routes.
They have consistently increased the price of T90 tickets and are abandoning it from 2015.

Then build a parallel cycle route on the bridge - they've had two opportunities to do this.

Leap Card daily and weekly capping and Leap 90 capping pretty much sorts this.

    The 6.90 daily cap >> 2 t90 fares.

Was there some talk of renovating the private bridge Guinness' had to get into Farmleigh?
Although a high level bridge would be better for cycling, instead of climbing up out of the Liffey valley.
