Is it possible to run a waging machine off the tank in the attic
    instead of off the mains?

In general, absolutely everything, except drinking water is supposed to come from a tank.

I get my information from the plumbing apprenticeship I served and the 13 years I've been in the industry . Just because you see it done everywhere from the mains , does not make it correct.

You got 3 years on me kid congratulations but just because
someone told you on site 1 day it's to be run from the tank
    Does not make it correct

The only reason waging machines are hooked up to the mains is because usually mains is the only cold supply downstairs. You'll never see in the instruction manual that it should be mains.
