If a bit of metal to paint up. Was wondering what would be the best paint out there to use?

I always found hammerite good as you can paint it straight on without pretreatment but it can be a bit pricey.

    Recommendations?

I'll put up a picture tomorrow of paint I used during the week on the crush. It's about €20 cheaper than hammerite for 5L and I think it sticks better. Almost looks like glue going on.

Why not? Can you not take it apart?

If you're going painting, you'll need to get it blasted first or no matter what paint you use won't last.

That's the thing. How far do I want to go with this.

Was going to go at it with the wire brush on the grinder

Is it worth painting or will the paint be flaking off rattling around the fields anyhow ? If you have pretty heavy steel in it will the rust do much damage anyhow I wonder

You'll probably be leaving it in regg so there would be a lot of lads wouldn't paint it at all.

I think no matter what paint you use it'll show some rust anyways and cow **** is very hard on things. Powerwasher might pull paint off if it's not 2 pack

Use the grinder and wire brush as best you can and a good coat of galoxide.

You can touch up bits then every year.

Id only bother to paint the frame, the paint will be off the drum by the time you go the length of a field,

Tractoil stuff wouldn't be to bad for the likes of it, leaves a nice finish to!

Yeah it's only the frame I'm going to put effort into. I'll paint the drum once and whatever comes off comes off

If you can get it properly clean, run over it with a gas blow lamp and you will see the moisture boiling off the surface. Before it cools too much paint it with Lowe Rust paint. Give it a second coat in a days time. Then you can slap a bit of whatever colour you like on top. I built a jeep trailer in 1986, and did the frame with that paint. Its still in great shape, despite drawing pigs weekly for ten years and cattle and sheep the rest of the time.

Yeah it being the time of year moisture would be another reason not to go with paint on that frame :D

You'll take that frame off yet to galvanisers.... :D

At a bit of guntering myself. Grassland related piece of machinery. Straight off to galvanisers once finished :) my young lad and his young lad will get the use out of it

I just see it with anything metal and cow ****. They don't mix. Paint is no match for it. Only thing that stands up to it are non ferrous metals - galvanise (zinc) stainless steel or aluminium.

There's a paint you can get now that will stick to zinc if you were fussy and wanted it a certain colour.

Will be doing railings on outside wall of house and that's what I will be doing. No painting every year. If l could galvanise the house l would!!! :D

Hi reggie . Heres what i'd do. If your not getting it blasted(recomend you do), clean as well as you can, flap disc is better than wire brush as wire brush will only polish rust.
Once cleaned to metal use 2k etch primer 1K is alright too.2 litre kit e40 should be enough.Use 2 coats of this.1k grey primer is usless on bare metal as it offers little or no rust protection and poor adhesion. 1 litre of 2k paint with .5 lt of hardener will cost you 40-50 but will cover as much as 2.5 lt of 1k tractor paint. If your afraid of it chipping from stones you could put a few coats of body shultz down on the primer.let it dry for a few days and rub down with 320 water-paper.this will give you a thick rubbery layer and youll still get a good finish on the paint.2 cans of this for 22 euro. A hundred euro will paint it with bodyshop quality paint wheras you'd spend near 80 quid for a few litres of poor quality tractol paint and primer
