    Hi all,

I'm looking forward to my first ever tournament in kilkenny next weekend. So I'm just curious about what to expect, I've never even been to a tournament as a spectator.

My aims are to enjoy the weekend, and take in as much as possible and hopefully play well in as many games as possible.

So what should I expect, or bring with me etc. to survive as take in as much as I can.

Are there usually vendors and bits for sale at tournaments?

The Kilkenny Chess tournament now in its 38th year is the most sociable of events. Bring a working Biro and some socialising funds. Make sure you play in the Blitz on Sunday night where a Grandmaster will get an opportunity to play you!

There's a good article here on the subject of what to expect from your first tournament here, although much of it applies specifically to American tournaments - while there are a few BYO-chess-set tournaments in Ireland, they're not the norm.

There's a good selection of books and equipment on sale each year at Bunratty, and while I've never been to Kilkenny, I wouldn't imagine it's too different as Kilkenny isn't that much smaller.
